Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 06/11/2020

» King, Queen, Bishop takes Pawn, Knight takes Rook, Double Attack, Checkmate -- these are probably the most common terms when we think of chess. But when it comes to a movie plot, chess may be dull and uninteresting. That's not the case in The Queen's Gambit, a new Netflix original series about a young female chess prodigy, who's determined to break into this male-dominated world of competitive chess during the 50s and 60s. This compact seven-episode limited series is exceptionally fresh, elegant and captivating.

An R-rated roller-coaster ride

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 19/06/2020

» A dozen strangers suddenly wake up to find themselves in a remote field. They have no idea where they are or how they got there, but the next thing they know they're being hunted down for sport. Judging by its premise or the trailer, the new action/horror film The Hunt could give you an impression of another The Hunger Games or Maze Runner, a survival story mixed with strong political messages. But the film surprisingly delivered a satire, dark humour combined with really well filmed action sequences, plus some of the most likeable performances you'll see in a movie this year.

» I'm not afraid of a long story and in fact enjoy long movies if the film is engaging or when there is a payoff. A lengthy movie means there's more room for the filmmaker to add more complexity and character development. I will gladly sit there for three or four hours and love every second of it. But sadly, that's not the case with Netflix's original action/heist thriller The Last Days Of American Crime. During its two hours and 30 minutes, I found myself struggling to finish the film the entire time.

Newish twist on a classic tale

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 29/05/2020

» Growing up, we were all familiar with the name of the Brothers Grimm who left us such an astounding legacy of folklore and fairy tales collected and published from the 19th century, like Snow White, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Beauty And The Beast, that have been made into hundreds of TV shows and films, animated and otherwise, over the years. However, when we think of fairy tales, we most likely think of cute Disney versions, but the original Grimm fairy tales weren't actually intended for children and are incredibly gruesome in tone.

Altar-native reality

» There are plenty of romantic comedy movies that use a gimmick to make themselves more appealing apart from the love story. Events that take place in a single day is one of those popular gimmicks with a story that often gets pretty strange and wild as the plot unfolds, and which is sometimes incredibly effective. Though other times, not quite.
