» Under the baton of National Artist Rear Adm Veeraphan Vawklang, The Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra (RBSO) last week performed "Thai Classical Music" to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's 85th birthday at the Main Hall of the Thailand Culture Centre. The programme consisted of works from different genres that reflected Her Majesty's great benevolence to the country during the reign of the late King Bhumibol.

Poonchok Kularbwong, founder, music director and conductor of the newly established Sunrise String Orchestra, instills all of these attributes into his young students and orchestra members. He provides them with opportunities and encourages young musicians to play beautiful music, as his mentor and National Artist Col Choochart Pitaksakorn has been doing for him for years.

Cello to the fore

» For the first time, over 50 cellists including professionals, teachers and students _ the youngest seven years old _ came together last week for a concert at Chulalongkorn University's Music Hall. The 200-seat venue was packed and extra chairs had to be put up front to accommodate the audience. The atmosphere before the concert was merry, but turned solemn when the cello orchestra played the royal anthem and silence reigned.
