The city that is half the world

Life, Peerawat Jariyasombat, Published on 30/03/2017

» Iranian cities are a far cry from what's reported in the news. Terrorism in the Middle East, missile-testing and other international news reports have made me believe Iran is a dangerous place. But once I see Esfahan, I realise that the Persian proverb "Esfahan nesf-e jahan", "Isfahan is half the world", almost fits the bill.

Historic, tranquil and picturesque

Life, Peerawat Jariyasombat, Published on 01/01/2015

» Just a short drive from bustling Bangkok, Chanthaburi is a calm coastal town perfect for a break from the city. A long beach stretches for kilometres, looking resplendent under bright blue sky and alongside the azure sea, which is almost as smooth as glass. Kids with buckets and toys enjoy peaceful moments on sandy beaches while their parents enjoy som tum and easy lunches under the shade of trees and huts.

Pedal-powered panorama

» Cycling through the historic centre of Chiang Mai is a good deal easier than trying to get around by car. Compared to nearby neighbourhoods like Tha Phae or Huay Kaew, the streets in the old quarter are usually very quiet and a journey on two wheels within the square-shaped area enclosed by the old city moat rarely takes more than 15 minutes. Riding a bicycle is also more convenient (no need to fight for parking spaces) and much cheaper than taking the local form of public transport, the red song taew with its flat rate of 20 baht per passenger.

Neglected neighbour

» So close to Bangkok that it is invariably overlooked by day-trippers, Nakhon Pathom is neither an exotic nor a particularly exciting destination. What this town does have in bucketfuls, though, is a tranquil, laid-back atmosphere, good food at reasonable rates and a few spots that are so beautiful you'll probably want to make a return visit.

Bhutan's other capital

Life, Peerawat Jariyasombat, Published on 31/01/2013

» Thimphu, the modern-day capital of Bhutan, is known to the small but growing band of visitors to the tiny Himalayan kingdom, but if it's tranquillity and antique charm you're after, the former capital of Punakha is the place to head for.

» Getting all the way to the Plain of Jars by car is no longer beyond the bounds of possibility.
