Making politics palatable

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 23/06/2017

» While you may already know about Shallow News in Depth — a very popular satirical news recap show on internet-based SpokeDark TV — and its co-hosts John Winyu and Por Mor, there's another person who's been very instrumental to its success. Her name is Janya "Rosie" Wongsurawat, John's older sister and Por Mor's wife, who graduated from Thammasat's Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication. As the show's producer and SpokeDark's co-founder, she's the brains behind its many popular shows. We talked with Rosie about SpokeDark's origins and its new show, her thoughts on the government's efforts to regulate the media and, most importantly, her favourite quote by Uncle Tu.

For the love of comics and sneakers

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 29/07/2016

» Sneakers can be a form of self-expression and an outlet for creativity. That's what Kraftka, a sneakers brand with a cool concept, is about. Chanasinj "Sunny" Sachdev, Kraftka's co-founder and owner, puts a new spin on footwear by offering a platform for sneakers enthusiasts to be both creators and collectors. We first knew Sunny as a co-creator of American-style comic books The Roach but he has also been the creative mind behind many projects. Guru chats with Sunny, a comic book geek and video gamer at heart, after he came back from giving a talk on his brand at Discovery Asia's Digital Disruption Week in Singapore last week. He told us about his entrepreneurial journey, what Kraftka's new pop-up shop has in store for sneakers enthusiasts, and more.

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 18/09/2015

» "Bangkok Car Free Day 2015" will take place on Sunday (Sep 20). "Car free days" are organised in different cities around the world to encourage people to get around without cars, and instead use mass transit, cycle or walk. To commemorate this year's car-free day, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration encourages you to join its bike rally and street fair near Sanam Luang, using public transport to get there. But we think you can do better than that. We present the dos and don'ts to help you use (or, in some cases, brave) various forms of Bangkok transportation like a pro.

» We all have to ring call centres to ask for help (or complain) from time to time. But navigating their sometimes labyrinthine, overly complicated systems can be frustrating. Call Zen, a mobile application recently launched on the App Store and Google Play, helps solve this conundrum. We speak with 30-year-old Pongpat Phukanud, the app's co-developer.

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 01/05/2015

» What can’t you do at 7-Eleven branches these days? Recently we learned you’re able to send parcels or get your clothes dry-cleaned at its outlets. We hope leaving a pet in a store’s care before going on vacation is next. That got us thinking about other everyday things in Bangkok that have evolved over time. After painstaking armchair research, we’ve dug up some trivia that should give you new appreciation of common sights — or at least be an edu-taining holiday read.

But don’t fret, fellow Bangkokians — thanks to advanced technology and (sketchy) 3G connections, you can solve these problems using nothing but your fingertips. Here’s our selection of apps and websites to help you navigate Bangkok with more ease.

» Between work, hitting the gym, checking Facebook, taking selfies, visiting malls and countless other activities in the life of a Bangkokian, you may be simply too busy (or exhausted) to make an effort to eat healthily. Also, who cooks these days anyway, right? If you find yourself in this situation, it might be worth your while to look into deliverers of healthy meal plans as the number of them seems to be on the rise.
