» It’s quite certain that National Council for Peace and Order big boss Prayuth Chan-ocha will become the next prime minister of Thailand, according to forecasts by two prominent fortune tellers.

Postbag: Contempt for Kaem

News, Published on 28/07/2014

» The article “SRT fixes rape case payout” (BP, July 27), which said the State Railway of Thailand had agreed to compensate the family of murder victim Nong Kaem with a payout of 700,000 baht, shows complete insensitivity by SRT decision-makers.

A passport to happiness is all you need

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 26/07/2014

» Like a sinner praying for salvation, I pray that the Ministry of Education will launch the "good deeds passports" project before the next full moon. Kids, parents and disciplinarians are dying to wave it around like a diploma of sanity, or an amulet against ghosts and anarchism. Interim constitution tightens the regime’s iron grip

News, Nattaya Chetchotiros, Published on 24/07/2014

» The 2014 interim charter allows the junta to make amendments to increase its power as the situation requires. It is the first charter ever to contain such a clause — a clear signal the military can declare a state of emergency in the country at any time.

The price of luck

Life, Kanokporn Chanasongkram, Published on 16/07/2014

» One afternoon, as I was walking through a fresh market, the normally talkative female vendors were rather quiet. All ears were pressed to the radio, their attention captured by the broadcast of the lottery draw. After the results were read, it was interesting to see the jubilant and disappointed reactions on the faces of the people in the market.

The big issue: Foreign affairs

Alan Dawson, Published on 13/07/2014

» For months, if not years, prior to May 22, most Western and some Asian governments had lobbied the Thai military hard, stating or plainly warning that a direct overthrow of the government would bring strong reactions, some measured punishments and loud recriminations from overseas.

Postbag: No one cares at SRT

News, Published on 12/07/2014

» Stories of the tragic deaths of innocent children are heartbreaking, especially if they could have been prevented. About 15 years ago my son, who was in his early teens, was travelling on the night train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok with a group from his school. A couple of hours after the kids and their chaperones had settled in their bunks for the night, my son felt the groping hands of a State Railway of Thailand (SRT) employee.

Public can afford to be less uncritical of the coup

News, Achara Ashayagachat, Published on 08/07/2014

» Congratulations to the military for taking control of the nation and managing to win over the public in opinion polls, even if they are doing so with the connivance of a largely uncritical media.

Postbag: Everyone's a winner

News, Published on 08/07/2014

» Between the government price of about 74 baht per ticket and the retail price of 80 baht per ticket there is enough profit for everybody if the risks are removed.
