Give the gift of jasmine

Raising the (rooftop’s) bar

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 02/05/2014

» A good rooftop place is worth getting your ears popped in an elevator, climbing some additional stairs, risking your fresh-from-salon hairdo and getting over your fear of heights for. The Roof is a recent entry into the dining scene and proves to be quite a contender with its high altitude and attitude. The venue offers a modern and stylish vibe with music that isn’t intrusive. The view from the venue is very generous and almost unspoiled (except for one corner where a nearby condo stands too close) and the seats are arranged in a way that almost everyone gets a front-row view. Lovers can enjoy some eye-locking and snuggling in high-back couches while friends can lounge about at dining booths. The weekday crowd consists of international hotel guests and office workers looking to unwind while the weekend sees friends and lovers.

At rice rainbow's end

B Magazine, Suthon Sukphisit, Published on 20/04/2014

» We have no way of knowing what new strains of rice will appear in the future, whether the grains will be long or short, soft or hard, or how their fragrance might differ from that of the types we have now. This is because, as it has come down to us from the past, rice has changed constantly. As the natural environment, the weather, water sources, and the character of the soil have changed over time, rice, too, has changed naturally.

Worth its salt?

Life, Arusa Pisuthipan, Published on 12/03/2014

» Tap water in many parts of Bangkok, even after being filtered, has never before tasted so salty and unpalatable — so much so that many households have opted to purchase bottled drinking water.

Dishes with a bit of stick

B Magazine, Published on 02/03/2014

» No it isn’t just for the cheese plate. I get fed up with pulling limp heads of celery out of friend’s fridges. I’m not sure why people buy it if they don’t know what to do with celery — it’s a waste of food and farmers’ time.

Ring in the new

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 16/12/2013

» Bangkok was different in February 1970, back when Dusit Thani first opened her doors onto the junction of Silom and Rama IV. Beer was ten baht, gas one baht a litre, a good hotel room eight dollars. Siam Centre was a copse of trees by a dusty roundabout. An original print ad for the hotel boasted of 'a wide choice of sophisticated supper clubs, Continental and Siamese restaurants, coffee shops and cocktail lounges.' The photo shows the building looking much as it does today, minus the towering downtown skyscrapers, which is precisely the appeal of this grand dame of Bangkok hospitality.

Documenting disaster

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 30/10/2013

» Like other environmental calamities, the 54,000-litre oil spill in the Gulf of Thailand from PTT Global Chemical's pipeline on the morning of July 27 will soon become a distant memory. Collective anger towards PTT has started to subside thanks to a well-oiled PR machine and orchestrated efforts by Thai authorities to play down the environmental impact.

Across the silk road by panda

B Magazine, Published on 13/10/2013

» For bold adventurers Chase Berenson and Charla Hughes, some of the most dramatic moments on the Mongol Rally 2013 anticlimactically manifested themselves towards the very end of their 16-country, 42-day Eurasian escapade, just as they were closing in on finish line in Ulaanbaatar.
