» The 29-year-old Atiwan “Wine” Kongsorn is a self-proclaimed witch and spiritual consultant. He holds two bachelor degrees from Srinakharinwirot University in music as well as philosophy and religion. Wine and a group of Thai pagans co-founded a witch cafe called Ace of Cups in Lat Phrao (Mon-Wed 11am-9pm, Fri-Sun 11am-10pm. Nak Niwat Road, between Sois 27 and 29, 02-932-5128, facebook.com/AOCwitchcafe). The unique cafe is named aft er a tarot card and is where patrons go to enjoy a coffee with cake or have a spell cast on them.

» Ademonstration against a controversial dam project in Mae Wong National Park will start at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre tomorrow. The dam plan has been criticised for its lack of transparency, questionable effi ciency in preventing future fl ooding and its threat to irreplaceable trees and wildlife. To deputy PM Plodprasob Suraswadi, forests can be regrown and wildlife bred, but an online petition against the project on Change.org has garnered over 113,401 signatures, becoming the biggest campaign of its kind in Asia (who knew that Thais are such environmentalists?!).

» Last week Education Minister Chaturon Chaisaeng ordered officials to look into a report prepared by the World Economic Forum (WEF) that showed the Thai educational system was potentially left behind at the bottom among eight Asean countries surveyed (to be fair, the WEF surveyed 144 countries around the world and in certain aspects of education we're doing better than others). Our dad, the Bangkok Post, reported later in the week that the minister vowed to embark on efforts to improve the education system and that his ministry will make education reform a national agenda.

» Dancing with the Stars, the Thai version of British TV series Strictly Come Dancing, premiered earlier this month while Dance Your Fat Off, a reality TV show in which 12 big-boned contestants will shed their weight through dancing for a chance to win big prizes, will hit Thai TV on Feb 2. The auditions for the third season of Thailand's Got Talent is about to take place nationwide early next month. It seems this year we're going to be seeing a good dose of dancing on the airwaves.

» Thai-Taiwanese Max Opamuratawongse, 26, lived in Bangkok from the ages of nine to 15 before moving to America. Although he graduated with a degree in Economics, Max decided to pursue a career in music in Taiwan. Max and his Taiwanese-American mate Steven, 20, formed a pop duo called Mixion (read "mission"). Their self-titled EP was released on Nov 16 through Warner Music Taiwan. The act is in talks about bringing their music to Thailand.
