Sucking up to China

News, Postbag, Published on 04/09/2015

» Re: Nopporn Wong-Anan’s Sept 3 column, “Should regime not have deported Uighurs?” only helps reinforce what is occurring in Thailand’s relations with China.

Thais can be brutal

News, Postbag, Published on 29/08/2015

» I read with some incredulity the comment by the police general who is heading the investigation into the Aug 17 bombing, that a Thai group was unlikely to have carried out the attack because it was “too brutal for Thais to inflict on their compatriots”.

Culprit's ID easy to find

News, Postbag, Published on 28/08/2015

» Regarding mobile phone tracking in connection with the Erawan bombing (BP, Aug 26), we know the approximate time and location of the sender. A little help from the telecom operators would reveal the SIM card and IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) of the caller and receiver. It would also allow listening in on the recording to reveal nationalities and finally permit tracing the ring of conspirators. If the culprit was so foolish to have a registered SIM and fail to turn off his GPS it would be all the easier. The police should have tried this earlier and saved on reward money.

Journalist charges a joke

News, Postbag, Published on 26/08/2015

» I was shocked at the Aug 25 report that Kwan Hok-Chun, a journalist from Hong Kong who covered the Erawan shrine bombing, was apprehended at Suvarnabhumi airport. He was detained under the 1987 Arms Control Act after an X-ray machine at the departure terminal detected a helmet and bulletproof vest with the word “Press” on it in his carry-on luggage. Both items are considered weapons under the act.

112 debate welcome

News, Postbag, Published on 22/08/2015

» Re: "King's views key", (PostBag Aug 20), "Section 112 essential", (PostBag, Aug 18) and "Follow King's advice", (PostBag, Aug 13). It is heartening to read such a thoughtful and considered exchange of views on a sensitive subject, particularly at such a fraught time for Thailand.

TV better than UK aid?

News, Postbag, Published on 21/08/2015

» I would like to congratulate Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha for his insightful comments, when asked about the UK’s offer of assistance in the investigation of the bombing at the Erawan Shrine (BP, Aug 20). He said: “Do you want foreign countries to intervene in every issue?... It is a breach of sovereignty... There is no need to get outsiders involved.”

Alien laws rethink

News, Postbag, Published on 17/08/2015

» I wholeheartedly agree that the poor English published on the Ministry of Labour website is an embarrassment. However, the main issue is that the laws governing banned professions for foreigners (aliens) is desperately outdated and in need of a quick and thoughtful revision.
