» The Dark Tower had every reason to be good. It's an adaptation of a renowned series of novels by Stephen King. It features Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey in leading roles. It's also directed (and scripted) by the man who wrote the 2009 Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, as well as 2012's A Royal Affair, both stellar films.
A war worth watching

» Despite being critical and commercial successes upon their release, the Planet Of The Apes reboot franchise -- beginning with 2011's Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and followed by 2014's Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes -- never really registered on my radar. I did watch the 2011 film when it was first released, though I didn't find it particularly memorable. I completely forgot about the second, and only realised 15 minutes into War For The Planet Of The Apes that it was in fact the third and closing feature in the series.

» While I can't say much about the first two Warcraft games -- released in the mid-90s -- Warcraft 3 is perhaps one of the most influential video games of the 21st century, giving birth to the MOBA genre of video games and the multi-billion-dollar e-sports industry that followed it. It was also the foundation of perhaps the most successful online game in history, World Of Warcraft, which -- at its peak -- had over 12 million players paying monthly subscriptions to play it. If any video game franchise could break the trend of the horrible video game adaptation films, it should be Warcraft.

» Walking into Captain America: Civil War, the 13th Marvel film to be released since 2008, I felt like I knew exactly what I was in for. Like with a good majority of Marvel's past films, I assumed this was going to be another two-and-a-half hours of excellent action and CGI imagery peppered with some witty dialogue, wrapped around a serviceable plot with an uninspired villain.
Slow burn

» Despite having nary a sky-scraping kaiju in sight, 10 Cloverfield Lane managed to make my hair stand in a way the original 2008 found-footage monster feature never could. Featuring great acting, a brilliantly written script and impressive directing work, 10 Cloverfield Lane isn't the kind of film that uses jump-scares or freakish monstrosities to induce fear in its characters or its audience. Instead, there is an atmosphere of slow, creeping dread all throughout the film, like the anticipation of creatures around the next corner.
Pales in comparison to the original

» The original The Transporter series will always have a place in my heart as one of the most entertaining action flicks of all time. Jason Statham's portrayal of the mysterious Frank Martin appealed to me with his deadpan humour and silent, threatening stares, not to mention his borderline mythic skills with the wheel.
