» A blogger a number of years ago cited an alleged Unesco statistic stating that Thais only read eight lines per year compared to the five books a year Singaporeans and Vietnamese read. I couldn't find the statistic anywhere but a former editor for Guru also wrote in one of her past editor's note that the National Statistic Office reported in 2005 that Thais read an average of just seven lines a year. However, the Unesco site which you can check out has traced that illiteracy has begun declining in 2015 so perhaps the seven-lines-per-year has improved. But why in the world am I talking about Thailand's literacy rates when we usually talk about food or Uncle Tu's latest blunders in this magazine? Well, today is actually World Book Day, and we're listing out a few things you can do to celebrate the occasion -- and perhaps also keep that upward trajectory on the Unesco stat going. » Streaming and e-sports are big nowadays but gaming has been around for years. You've got boardgames, which evolved into something a little more complicated like Dungeons & Dragons. You've got your arcades, which then became consoles and handhelds. Now we have PC gaming that's continuously being pushed to the limit. Like that time Polish hardware retailer x-kom made Doom Eternal run at 1,000 fps by pouring liquid nitrogen into the computer. Even if you just play on your phone during your commute, that pretty much makes you a gamer of sorts. Whether you're just a casual gamer or you live and breathe games, these places in and around the city are gaming havens that are worth a visit. You've got your classic arcade place, which is rare to find in Bangkok, a shop that sells classic games and consoles, and a legit e-sports studio to hone your skills by yourself or with your e-sports team. » The prospect of being immortal may seem like a good idea at first, but the immortals of Netflix's new film, The Old Guard, are dealing with hundreds -- some even thousands -- of years' worth of baggage while being hunted down. Based on the graphic novel of the same name, the film follows Andromache of Scythia aka Andy and her group of immortal mercenaries, who have been doing assignments all throughout history but managing to keep their existence unknown. That is, until Copley and Merrick show up, an ex-CIA agent and a pharma company CEO who wants to capture them because they may have the genetic key that will provide a solution to the world's sicknesses. Guru spoke to Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays Copley; Harry Melling, who plays Merrick; and the three immortal mercenaries: Marwan Kenzari, Matthias Schoenaerts and Luca Marinelli.

Talking Bright

» Released globally a few weeks ago, Bright is the ambitious Netflix original genre-bending film that stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton as cops in a present-day Los Angeles inhabited by mythical creatures like orcs and elves. The film is Netflix's biggest film to date with a budget of $90 million as well as a global press tour prior to the film's release. Guru was able to be part of the Japan premiere and press junket and had an opportunity to talk to producers Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless, director David Ayer (who also directed Will Smith in Suicide Squad), and actress Noomi Rapace about Bright.
