Successes, failures and a finale

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 12/04/2017

» On May 2, Apple will announce its Second Quarter Results for 2017. The conference call is scheduled for 2pm Cupertino Time on Tuesday, which is around 4am Wednesday here. In the next couple of weeks we can expect a series of comments about how Apple will fail; and on how it should spend its cash on buying companies. Ignore these: Apple does its own thing and is usually right in the long run.

A busy week for Apple and me

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 05/04/2017

» On March 28, there were updates for iOS (10.3) that introduced AFPS: the new Apple File System, which is expected eventually to expand to macOS. There may be some gains in space and speed but these are expected to be small. Also updated were macOS (10.12.4), WatchOS and tvOS.

Correcting impressions, Apple news and a backup alternative

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 01/02/2017

» I bumped into one of my former students one evening last week travelling home on the BTS. As a computer engineer he is interested in technology and asked me about the AirPods. I took them out to chat. He told me that he had heard that they fell out easily. Not true, I said. Not once, even riding on the back of motorcycles through the Thon Buri sois has this happened.

Not all electrical devices are created equal

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 18/01/2017

» Last week was the 10th anniversary of Steve Jobs' iPhone introduction. I was there covering the event for the Bangkok Post's Database section, which is now part of Life. I did handle a prototype iPhone the day after that memorable keynote, but at that stage it was still under development. During the next six months up to its June introduction, there was much misinformation about the device from commentators who had never seen it, including a widely-copied theory about the ineffectiveness of the touch keyboard. It continues today.

Improving connections to the new MacBook Pro

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 11/01/2017

» When writing a summary of 2016 on my own site recently, I made a prediction: Apple's Q1 2017 financial results would be announced on Jan 24. I was wrong, it will be on the 31st, and as always will feature live audio transmission, although it will be at about 5am here.

iPhone 7 officially coming

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 19/10/2016

» The iPhone 7 will be on sale in Thailand on Friday and I checked prices on some online sites. Dtac was hiding its information behind passwords: only for those who had pre-ordered. True showed the new iPhones contract-free, from 26,500 baht for the 32GB iPhone 7 up to 39,500 baht for the 256GB iPhone 7 Plus.

A visit to Affinity apps developers

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 10/08/2016

» One of my favourite apps released in the last couple of years is Affinity Photo: a full-featured graphics editing program for the Mac aimed at home users who need something more than basic tools, but who may not want to use Adobe Photoshop because of pricing models.

OS X with limited facilities

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 03/08/2016

» This week I am in Britain taking a vacation with my parents. The main problem for me has been the lack of internet. While my mother likes devices such as electric can openers, tooth brushes and carving knives, being online is unimportant. Her phone (which is off most of the time) is a good example of devices before smartphones existed.

AppleTV, Movies and Recent News

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 20/07/2016

» Saturday was livened up by an attempted coup in Turkey. While there are restrictions in place for social media use there, President Erdogan was still able to show viewers he was alive by calling in to a TV station using FaceTime on an iPhone. I am not sure quite what to think of that.
