» The public space along the Mekong in the town of Nakhon Phanom was quite bright. It was illuminated by the yellow light of street lamps and colourful decorative lights to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. The ambience highly contrasted with the other side of the river, a quiet scene of the reserved forest of the Phou Hin Poun National Protected Area in Khammouane Province in Laos.

» I dipped my hand in a private hot-spring pool in the headquarters of Chae Son National Park in Lampang to test the heat. The temperature was about 40C. It was too hot at first, but for a short while it seemed to be tolerable.

» A simian warrior with supernatural powers acquired through Taoist practices, the Monkey King is the much-loved hero of the Chinese literary classic Journey to the West. Most recently portrayed in a Hong Kong fantasy flick, the immensely strong protagonist — Sun Wukong in Mandarin — rebels against the Jade Emperor of Heaven and the character may well have been inspired by a real-life creature, the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana).
