Suffering silently

Oped, Postbag, Published on 05/03/2021

» Re: "Government spends its way into trouble", (Opinion, March 4). Kudos to Khun Chartchai Parasuk for this highly professional, brilliant article. Hopefully, it should be a wake-up call.

Hazy booze ideas

Oped, Postbag, Published on 13/06/2020

» The approach to alcohol in Thailand needs some serious review and new structure. Thailand has great food and great food goes with nice wine and that is in the Mediterranean style and fits with tourism and lifestyle.

Melodramatic rants

News, Postbag, Published on 08/05/2019

» Vint Chavala makes one of his customary melodramatic rants in "Poisonous billionaires", (PostBag, May 4), this time against "many billionaires", one presumably being Mr Thanathorn. However, he does not name any others apart from Thaksin Shinawatra, nor does he give us the faintest clue why Mr Thanathorn personally should be regarded as "poisonous".

Doing right by the children

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 29/10/2018

» Henrietta H. Fore couldn't be happier with the way Thailand has made progress in promoting and protecting children's rights in the past 70 years of its presence -- by that name -- in the Kingdom. The Unicef executive director was recently in Thailand, and the success stories of the country through years of governmental policies and support from other agencies couldn't fail to put a smile on her face: the country has almost a 100% rate of birth and healthcare registration, access to clean drinking water, sanitation and primary-school attendance.

Noisy riders are relevant

News, Postbag, Published on 07/10/2018

» Re: "Summary execution", (PostBag, Oct 6). Unfortunately, my letter was cruelly edited to the point that it made little sense. In my original, I included photographs in support, and said that although a (very weak) argument could be made for motorcycles riding on the footpath against the flow of traffic, none can be made for those that ride on the footpath with the flow of traffic.

It's a dry argument

The food rescuer

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 13/10/2017

» Tanaporn "Faii" Oi-isaranukul (second from left) is a donor relations coordinator and food hygienist at ThaiHarvest-SOS (fb.com/thaiharvestsos, thaiharvestsos.org), a local food rescue foundation which raises awareness around food waste and combats it. So far, it has rescued 65 tonnes of edible excess food and collected around 120 tonnes in scraps of food to make compost. One kilo of food provides up to three meals. Do the maths. They have provided 195,000 meals for those in need such as refugees and orphans. And, for every B1,000 spent, they serve 50 meals. Faii, a food science graduate from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, tells us about the budding organisation and how you can help out.

Our Farewell Flowers

Life, Published on 21/06/2017

» 'Flower-making is all about imagination," Aporn Kulkusol said as her fingers nimbly arranged the petal of a paper daffodil. Scattered on the table in front of her were petal-shaped paper, scissors, thread spools, candles and incense sticks. "Use your heart," was the middle-aged woman's advice as she completed the daffodils -- dararat -- the flower that the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej often gave to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit when they lived in Switzerland.

Lost in translation

News, Postbag, Published on 02/03/2017

» I enjoyed Somsak Pola's comments in his March 2 letter, "Writing without rules" about the Thai vs English languages. However I take exception to: "The problem with Grade 6 students, however, is not regarding writing. It is about misspelling, using slang and colloquialisms which should be easy to fix. Mai pen rai."
