For some schools, the problems might be poor facilities, lack of books and teaching materials or even more basic, like inadequate electricity and telecommunications access. For other schools, the constraint might be insufficient numbers of educators, community support or even constraints in students reaching the classroom.

» After making a donation, Apiluk Ongsiriporn and his wife Nichaphat Pornyoskrai left the orphanage in Phang Nga province and headed to the turtle shelter on the beach. Here, the newlyweds learned about the perils of sea life for turtles and then decided to adopt a turtle. The baby turtle is named, marked, installed with a microchip for monitoring, and then released back to sea. Their donation will go to help other turtles in the future.

Iconic wooden bridge restoration delayed

» Restoration of the collapsed Uttamanusorn Bridge, better known as Saphan Mon in Sangkhla Buri, Kanchanaburi province, has been delayed. Seventy metres of the 850m-long wooden bridge collapsed on July 28 last year, due to strong river currents. However, restoration could not begin immediately due to the high level of the river.

» In many ways, religious beliefs and subscriptions of faith in Thailand are enigmatic and inexplicable. This is a "Buddhist" country, and yet many people's beliefs are closely associated with the elements of folklore, from spirits to ghosts and other brands of superstition. Hindu gods, Chinese goddesses, Brahmin rites and pagan shrines are interweaved spiritually _ sometimes commercially _ with sacred amulets and guru monks (how else could the scandalous Luang Pu Nen Kham manage to do what he did?). Lord Buddha's teachings of self-reliance are held high, but there is always room for supplementary faiths to help Thais get through each difficult day.
