OPINION

Democratic justice

News, Postbag, Published on 13/04/2019

» I wish to thank the 12 diplomats and their respective democratic countries for finally supporting the Thai people. Foreign Affairs Minister Don Pramudwinai's comment, "It's an intervention in our justice system" is a joke. Without a truly democratically elected government there is no justice.

OPINION

Keeping democratic institutions weak

Oped, Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Published on 22/07/2022

» The worst thing one can do in Thai politics is to run for office and win by a landslide. When this happens, the knives will come out and the massive election winner will be overthrown before long -- one way or another -- because the real source of power in Thailand is unelected. Such was the fate of Thaksin Shinawatra when he spearheaded the Thai Rak Thai Party to win two landslide poll victories in January 2001 and February 2005, first a near majority and later a thumping 75% of the lower house of parliament.

OPINION

Inequality spurs democratic backsliding

News, Susan Stokes, Published on 15/07/2024

» With November's election in the United States fast approaching, Democrats continue to debate whether to campaign on the economy or the future of democracy. In fact, our research at the Chicago Center on Democracy shows that the two issues are closely connected: high levels of income inequality increase the risk of a democracy sliding into autocracy.

OPINION

Thailand's democratic foundations remain weak

News, Thanasak Jenmana & Amory Gethin, Published on 06/04/2019

» The past estimates on the evolution of income inequality in Thailand have been misleading. Thailand remains one of the most unequal economies in the world, and the situation has not been improving as swiftly as we have previously been told: it just stopped getting worse.

THAILAND

A democratic govt 'more important'

Post Reporters, Published on 23/07/2023

OPINION

New charter may not be democratic

News, Chairith Yonpiam, Published on 10/12/2020

» Today marks Thailand's Constitution Day, arguably one of the most forgotten political dates in national history.

OPINION

Double-edged sword of democratic hope

Oped, Dulyaphab Chaturongkul, Published on 29/07/2022

» Thailand is not new to virulent exchanges of polemical opinions between supporters of opposing political factions on social media and beyond. However, the latest outcry from diehard fans of the newly elected Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt against unfavourable criticism, proves one thing -- Thais still have much to prove before calling themselves democratically reasonable interlocutors.

OPINION

No exit from our democratic future

Oped, Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Published on 05/05/2023

» As Thailand's much-anticipated poll on May 14 heads into its homestretch, several clear trends and patterns are emerging to suggest that democratisation is making an inexorable comeback in this country, with positive implications for Southeast Asia and beyond. The immediate road ahead in Thai politics will likely still be bumpy, potentially marked by more judicial interventions and electoral manipulation, or even another military takeover, to thwart the people's choices at the poll. But eventually, pro-democracy forces backed by the Thai people's demand for change will come back time and again until there is a rebalanced, representative and reworked constitutional order in place.
