The thick, green mats of the aquatic plant have choked Thailand's canals and rivers for more than a century, and since the rainy season started, the army and local administration have been ordered to get rid off the expansive profusion of hyacinth from the Central Plains waterways within 10 days.

» At first glance, Saengsoem Harntalay appears as a typical Urak Lawoi sea gypsy, an ethnic group of seafarers that populate the coastal area and islands in the South Andaman Sea. Her skin tone is a deep dark, matching her sharp, bright eyes and imminent brows. In the same way that some villagers appears too shy and on guard, Saengsoem exudes the air of reserve and looks to be overly cautious against strangers.

» Rubbish disposal in Thailand can be a very dirty business, metaphorically as well as literally speaking. The recent fire at a garbage dump in tambon Phraeksa, Samut Prakan province, smouldered for days, necessitating the temporary evacuation of people living in its immediate vicinity and blanketing large swathes of eastern Bangkok in haze. And this past Sunday, another blaze erupted at a dump site in Samut Prakan, this time in Bang Phli district.

» Professor Murray Print is an Australian expert on civic education in Asian countries. Lecturing on sociology and civic education at the University of Sydney, Prof Print has also madetime to travel across Asia during the past decade to conduct research and offer advice on what educational programmes should be used instil deep-seated values of democracy in students. He also attends workshops at Chulalongkorn University on developing a curriculum for civic education in Thailand. He works as an advisor for Thai Civic Education, a campaign to develop and strengthen democracy education in Thailand.
