» Fifty years ago today the entire world breathed a tremendous sigh of relief after having come out of what was and still is the closest scrape with nuclear holocaust since the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan at the end of world War II, and one which would surely have had even graver consequences globally than the tragedies at Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

» Sept 29 and 30 this year must have been one of the most depressing weekends in decades for Buddhists around the world. That weekend there was a news photo showing a Buddha statue standing amid wreckage, with rows of coconut trees in the background. My heart sank and I immediately wanted to know which temple in which part of the world had been hit by a cyclone.

» The deeply disturbing video leaked on to the internet from the deep South raises many questions about what is happening in the struggle with the country's most serious security problem. Tens of thousands of people in Thailand and worldwide have watched the video on various media. Authorities must explain how such graphic images of the planned ambush, murders and looting of bodies were released. But the public must know what the government and its security forces intend to do about the ruthless lawlessness exposed so blatantly.

» When Pol Gen Priewpan Damapong made his pilgrimage to see Thaksin Shinawatra and sing "Happy Birthday" to the former prime minister, there were three common reactions. One was disgust at the national police chief for kowtowing to a fugitive convict. Another was adulation for the national police chief who paid homage to his former brother-in-law and all-around Thai hero. It's all a matter of perspective. The last one was "Who cares?"

» Saturday was the worst day ever in Thailand's long fight with terrorists. Two car bombs and two other blasts killed 14 people and wounded more than 350 in Yala town and in Hat Yai, the economic centre and largest city in the far South. Once again, authorities have called urgent meetings and issued statements meant to calm the nation. Once again, the security forces and political leadership alike have failed at their primary task of keeping the Thai people and visitors safe.
