LIFE

Some like it Siam

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 29/09/2017

» New things to do in Siam!? What an obvious story, we hear you say, dear readers! Another one about what's going on in the square mile of Bangkok's beating heart, which has been the epicentre of the city's art, culture and fashion scene since the 70s. Well, actually, new developments have occurred which simply cannot go unnoticed! And while researching the new, we found ourselves re-igniting that old flaming passion we had many years ago for the square. Some things don't change, and other things do, but it's safe to say that if you spend a day here, you'll locate that pulse that gives life to all your inspirations, be filled with new tastes and colours and perhaps pull an all-nighter working on your next big project. Read on to see why.

The sound effect

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 08/09/2017

» With the number of independent films being made and an increasing number of recording artists taking the leap into the unknown without a label, knowledge about sound and how and where to best capture it becomes key. Luckily you're in the right country. Thailand is a production hub for Southeast Asia when it comes to film and now even more so, music. So, if you've written music for a video, a movie, a music album or you've got this song in your head that you always dreamed of recording... where do you go to turn such far-fetched notes into reality? You could of course do it yourself and start off at home! All you'd need is a condenser mic, a laptop and a few other bits of hardware (e.g. an audio interface, headphones, a MIDI keyboard) and software (Logic Pro or Ableton are some of many) and you'd be well on your way. Or you could go to the professionals, who would have all the gear at your disposal as well as the know-how to see your visions turn into reality. We decided to investigate some of the city's existing recording studios to see what they have to offer in the way of making music.

» We had the privilege to meet with the very talented US-artist Gracelee Lawrence, who recently finished her year as a visiting artist in the Multidisciplinary Department of Art at Chiang Mai University on a Luce Scholars Fellowship. Her exhibition "When Watched" is currently showing at Bridge Art Space (<a href="http://fb.com/bridgeartspace">fb.com/bridgeartspace</a>) and ends on September 16. The exhibition is comprised of digital sculptures, videos, stories on the wall, illustrations and poems made using Google translate. Head there real quick if you haven't already. Read on to find out more about the artist who's breaking conventions and perhaps you may learn a little something too!

Leading by creativity

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 21/07/2017

» For many of us, creativity was stifled during childhood and at school. This is a tremendous shame, as the power of creativity and the benefits it can have on society are endless. But there’s good news. When you repress something, it can bloom back in full force. And we’ve noticed a bit of a “renaissance” in the creative fields happening in the city as of late. From designers to dancers, actors to architects, painters to poets and singers to start-up entrepreneurs, Bangkok’s bubbling away with an energy never before seen. Creativity is living everywhere, from the way people are wearing their clothes to the way the food is being arranged on our plates. People are even incorporating beer drinking into their yoga routine. If that’s not creative, then we don’t know what is! This week, we spoke to ten people in Bangkok and beyond living on their creativity. If you’re looking for inspiration to fuel whatever it is that you live for, read on.

Notes from Bangkok

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 02/06/2017

» This week, we're bringing you some musical notes through the likes of Bangkok's hottest -- in our most humble opinion -- singer-songwriters. Because in the age of digital, sometimes it's sweeter to go back to analogue. It's nice to appreciate where music came from not so long ago... It ain't just about the bashing of thumbs on laptops or the scratching of vinyls, you know? It's also about the strumming of guitar strings, the hitting of plastic and leather and the sound of a larynx voicing notes that came from somewhere close to the beat of a human heart! Yes, besides becoming Asia's hub for electronic music, Bangkok's equally also driving some of the slightly more natural sounds that continue to resonate with our musical souls. And we seem to have some pretty skilled lyricists on our turf too. Check these guys out before they blow up. Whoops, some of them already have!

Spiritual journeys on Bangkok's BTS

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 12/05/2017

» Those familiar with the contemporary art circles of Thailand will know that Kamin Lertchaiprasert's name carries immense respect. The Silpakorn University graduate and former student of The Art Student League of New York has spent most of his career developing a deep interest in religion and philosophy. Previously known for co-founding The Land Foundation that turned rice fields into spaces for site-specific art and architectural projects, as well as a number of international solo exhibitions, Kamin will now, potentially, be known for something even more soul awakening. He is currently crowdfunding a pioneering art project that will give Bangkok its first ever city-wide mobile installation. The campaign, "Universal Connections" is set to wrap an entire BTS train, inside and out, with pieces of art composed of "spiritual fractals". We sat down with the talented artist to find out more about this exciting project. If you're interested in seeing this ground-breaking project made possible — come on, won't you be glad to say good riddance to all that flashy corporate advertising we're bombarded with on a daily basis? — be sure to make your contribution to "Universal Connections" via the crowdfunding platform asiola.co.th.

Bangkok's lyrical power

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 24/02/2017

» Electronic dance music is great and all, but sometimes we feel somewhat disconnected when we listen to it. After all, a lot of the time, words -- our primary mode of expression as humans -- are missing. Music is music -- one of the greatest gifts of humankind and a whole language in itself -- but where would it be without the words?

» Alright guys, the Siamese fields of wonderment are no longer a figment of our imagination, they are in fact a reality fast approaching. Winter is gone. In fact, it never came. But that's beside the point. Wondefruit is coming. Wonderfruit is almost here. You know, that festival we've been waiting for since last year? Yes, that one.

Absolutely fabulous

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 02/12/2016

» Having professional health and beauty experts on call to come into my home had always been something I'd dreamed of having, but I was always too lazy (and quite frankly, not clever enough) to build an app for it. I had it drilled into my brain that such luxuries were only reserved for Kardashian-calibre celebrities. But with FABbrigade, a Bangkok-based app that answers every woman's (and man's) pampering needs, I've been proved wrong. If you've got a smart phone, you need this in your life, ASAP. Save your credit deets on there and the beauty world becomes your pearl-filled oyster. If you've got enough cash, that is.
