(Deep) Fried and tested

» THE SET-UP: Unlike their loud and overbearing neighbour Carl's Jr., Mono+Mono quietly squeezes itself in the middle of two restaurants with a maximum capacity of only 24 diners. Think New York loft-style cafe with high ceilings and hints of industrial decor here and there. Opting for the middle ground between a fast-food joint and restaurant, diners have to order at the counter but the food is served at your table. With only one or two staff around, service can be slow during busy hours (possibly on purpose to make customers work up their appetite) but the advantage of being able to park in a shaded car park is definitely a bonus. Diners include students, residents and office workers who are based around the area.

Hitting the 30s

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 15/08/2014

» Three sois in the heart of town have filled up with so many new restaurants and cafes we decided to designate it a foodie zone. It could be the fact that there’s no more space on Sukhumvit Soi 31 (if there was a Thai version of Monopoly, this would be Park Lane) and with Appia, Bella Napoli and Isao reigning supreme, diners can be seen queuing for dinner at ridiculous hours like 4:30pm. So what are new restaurants to do? Scooch down a couple of sois, it seems. We’ve compiled a list of new eateries in Sukhumvit Sois 31, 33 and 39 so you’ll be able to plan your whole day and night around this area and avoid having to curse and honk your horn at the non-moving traffic. Hurry on down before everyone decides to migrate to Sukhumvit Soi 41.

» During a trip to Japan years ago, I visited a village in Omiya, in Saitama prefecture outside Tokyo, where more than a dozen families grew and sold bonsai. “We get visitors from all over the world all the time,” Saburo Katoh, owner of Mansei-en nursery and founder of the Omiya bonsai village, told me at the time. “But the bonsai season is in October and November, when seasoned bonsai enthusiasts come to buy plants.

» ‘You need to do it smoothly but you need to do it quickly,” Donrohmanh Noomoui, aka Bang Roh, says through the mosquito-net veil that covers his entire head. In his right hand is a knife, and in the left a sticky honeycomb buzzing with live bees. His audience, who appear as nervous and jittery as the bees themselves, are villagers of Ban Koh Kram in Krabi province’s Muang district and are in training to become expert beekeepers. Keepers of the Asiatic honeybee (Apis cerana) to be precise.
