Not-so-newsworthy News

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 14/07/2017

» When you've pored over the news feed on Facebook as much as I have, you'll have surely noticed some news items that made you think "Why on earth did you report this?" or "Great, that's two minutes of my life I'll never get back." Here are five "news items" that I spotted recently that perhaps, IMHO, shouldn't have been cluttering up our screens.

Making the cut

Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 29/05/2017

» During this time when Bangkok is being hit with unseasonal rainstorms, one of the major concerns many have when commuting and walking through the streets is the long row of trees -- big, tall, green, and with their branches entangled in power lines. It's an embodiment of possible danger ready to strike down unsuspecting souls.

Suffer the little children

B Magazine, Andrew Biggs, Published on 15/01/2017

» It's the morning after Children's Day. It is testament to how deeply I am entrenched in Thai culture that I hardly bat an eyelid when Children's Day comes around. There was a time when on hearing of an impending Children's Day I would throw up my exasperated hands and exclaim: "We have a Children's Day in this country? Whatever for?"

A Time for Teppanyaki

Holiday Time, Published on 21/12/2016

» There seems to be a new trend emerging in Bangkok. For year-end celebrations, revellers don't just look for the parties that pull out the most stops or the fireworks that flash the brightest anymore -- now they climb to great heights in search of the most prominent perches in town, where they can ring in the new year with great food, drinks and, above all, style.

He also complained that several foreign workers also run or own shops in markets around the country, a practice that is against the law.

Kinkao Yang?

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 05/08/2016

» THE SETTING: The inadequate T-E transliteration often leads to accidental jokes. Therefore, Kinkao can mean "to eat rice, number nine or a knee (ouch!)" but the intermediate learners of the Thai language know it actually means to have a meal. Rice is such a staple in the Thai diet that it comes to symbolise food in general, you see. And yes, you can have more than rice at Kinkao, a new restaurant opened at Wishbeer about one month ago. To say that Kinkao is brand new isn't 100% accurate as it started out as an online business which matches talented home cooks with customers. Kinkao 2.0 evolved into a service providing chefs to cook for you at your home. In its third version, Kinkao has partnered up with Wishbeer to set up its kitchen there and create a symbiosis, complementing the latter's arsenal of craft beer with international flavours.

The Old Man and the Soi

Published on 26/02/2016

» You sense that the 1954 Nobel literature laureate, “for his mastery of the art of narrative…. in The Old Man and the Sea”, aka Ernest Hemmingway, would rather approve of the “Drinking & Dining Bar & Restaurant” that bears his name a matter of metres into Suk Soi 14 (steps from the Asok MRT/BTS interchange).
