» With over 200 films under his belt dating back to the 1960s, Jackie Chan needs no introduction. The popular stuntman, director and actor -- whose long career recently earned him an honorary Oscar for his "extraordinary achievements in film" on Nov 12 last year from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the first Chinese in history to receive the award -- is back with his latest film, Kung Fu Yoga, a Chinese-Indian production set for Thailand release today.

» Director Oliver Stone likes to tell stories of larger-than-life characters. Or not just characters, but real people caught up in the swirl of American history, which is sometimes to say world history: John F. Kennedy in JFK (1991); Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991); Richard Nixon in Nixon (1995); Fidel Castro in Commandante (2003); Alexander the Great in Alexander (2005); and George W Bush in W (2008). The fuzzy line between glory and shame of American policy is also his favourite subject, such as in the Vietnam War-set Platoon (1986), Wall Street (1987), Born On The Fourth Of July (1989) and World Trade Center (2006).
X-Men: Apocalypse doesn't mark the spot

» Despite being directed by the man who gave us the original X-Men and X2, a star-studded cast, and two beloved prequels, X-Men: Apocalypse manages to disappoint. In its attempt to both provide a satisfying ending for the X-Men: First Class trilogy as well as set up the new generation of X-Men (for future movies), the film has neglected pacing, plot and action, becoming in the process an incoherent mishmash of soulless special effects and A-list actors. As likeable as the new X-Men are, I doubt many will be looking forward to any of their future films, if this is the kind of stories we can expect.

» It was a sobering afternoon of hard truths following the screening of the documentary, The Hunting Ground at SF Cinema at CentralWorld on Saturday. The film tells the alarming story of sexual assault at many of US universities — including some of their most prestigious — as well as these universities’ appalling efforts in trying to keep these attacks hidden. The powerful and shocking film relies on on-camera testimonies of many young women and men who speak on how they were raped in colleges and how those colleges denied them justice.
The Force has indeed awoken

» I regretted attending the press screening of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens the moment the iconic Star Wars logo burst onto the screen. Not because I have anything against Star Wars, or that I didn't think the movie was going to be awesome. Quite the contrary, in fact. My regret lies in the fact that I'm not watching this movie at home, alone, where my inner geek can scream and cheer at the triumphant return of what is perhaps one of the most important cinematic universes in pop-culture history.

» Released just in time for Father's Day here in Thailand, Baby Steps is the directorial debut of Barney Cheng, the Taiwanese-American actor who once starred in Woody Allen's 2002 film Hollywood Ending, and is also produced by Hsu-Li Kong, the Oscar award-winning producer from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The film received the Tribeca Film Institute All Access production grant in 2014, and was also further funded by the Taiwan Ministry of Culture as well as the City of Taipei.
