» The Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra (RBSO) under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana has recently focused on a number of Russian classical works. For its concert at the Thailand Cultural Centre tomorrow, the RBSO moves firmly into the late 20th and early 21st centuries with a programme devoted to film soundtracks featuring the music from four classic movie musicals. Titled "Music From Great Movie Musicals", the concert under the baton of Vanich Potavanich is presented in honour of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

» The new Pixar animation Inside Out has opened in the US to a hearty reception (Bangkok has to wait until next month). The box office has been stellar — it racked up the highest opening gross in history for an original feature, i.e. not a sequel or remake — while critics have sung praises to the joyful braininess of the story. Inside Out takes place inside a girl's head, with the main characters the five emotions (Joy, Fear, Sadness, Anger, Disgust). Their adventures, through the colourful cerebrum, becomes a story about the happiness and anxiety of adolescent life. It's just July, but an early buzz for an Oscar's Best Picture nomination has already been heard.

This will be a very busy year at the cinemas with the intense parade of blockbusters, sequels, reboots and scavenged superheroes in search of redemption or glory — all the more reason for multiplex regulars to rejoice after a somewhat jaded 2014.
