A call for help

Life, Thana Boonlert, Published on 23/08/2022

» We pull on layers to protect our vulnerable core. When they break, we are exposed and desperate for new shells, but they take time and do not come easily. Sometimes, we borrow them from the dead.

Time is not on anybody's side

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 15/10/2021

» There's the anatomy -- the bone and the flesh, supple or flaccid. Then there's time, the cruellest judge of all. In Jakrawal Nilthamrong's Anatomy Of Time (the Thai title is simpler, Wela), the first sound we hear is a tick-tock metronome like the soundtrack of the cosmos as we watch an old lady gently tending to her tubed and bedbound husband. Time will be folded back. The old woman will become young and her dying husband will appear as a spirited, dashing military captain fighting communist insurgents for the good of the nation.

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 22/05/2020

» Rumour had spread early that morning that the Thai film would win big that night. How big? We daren't dream. The runner-up prize maybe? The air was filled with blissful silence, with faint songs from invisible birds occasionally seeping in from the canopy below.

Recognising your digital game-changers

Business, Alexandra Reich, Published on 10/01/2019

» When a chimpanzee is upset, another chimp will mimic the distress to show empathy. Female chimps do this more often than male chimps -- with one amazing exception. The group's alpha male will mimic distress even more often than the females. Among chimps, empathy sets both women and leaders apart.

A royal success story
