» As the year comes to a close and we're all looking back at the past 12 months with introspection, at Guru we will stick to time-honoured tradition of being reflectively snarky. Like any other year, 2021 had no shortage of cringe-worthy and WTF moments. So before we head into the new year with resolutions we'll give up on halfway through the first month of 2022, let's roll out the metaphorical red carpet as we award moments from the eventful year. It's time for this year's edition of the Guru Awards.

» To say that Thailand has been getting global recognition lately may be a bit of an understatement. After all, it's not a secret that it's a famous tourist destination with plenty of beautiful beaches and street food that's been topping lists for years now. Of course, these are only just a few things Thailand is well-known for but we don't really have the time to get into all of that (*cough* rigged election *cough*). However, people from the outside may have a narrow view of what Thailand and its culture really is, but fortunately, there are things that help put a spotlight on these things. The next instalment of the Fast and Furious franchise is filming right now in parts of Thailand, including Krabi where its governor stated that the film would be a "great advertisement for the nature, culture and history of the kingdom". Erm sure, that's what the Fast and Furious franchise is all about anyway. While the film will most likely be more about cars zoom-zooming and vroom-vrooming, there are a number of shows on TV that give a better focus on Thai culture. Here are a few.

» Any good superhero or supervillain has a good lair, a base of operations where they can keep tabs on their evil foes or scheme and plot world domination. Heroes have places like the Fortress of Solitude, the Batcave or the Avengers Tower. On the flipside, villains have the Death Star, Latveria, Mordor... and the White House. All of these places would perhaps send geeks like us frothing in our mouths over excitement if we were able to visit them IRL, but alas, most are fictional. However, are there any places here in the Big Mango that could somehow make up for it? We're pleased to tell you that yes, there are. Fret no more, fellow geeks -- Guru has compiled a list of the geekiest places in town.

» The Setting: Stepping inside the small, homey restaurant makes you feel as if you've left Thailand and entered a diner somewhere in America. It's not just because of the feel of the restaurant and the food. The owner, Katherine, is Thai-American and is very much hands-on with her customers, making them feel welcome and right at home and going around and checking up on them as they eat. We think that makes all the difference in terms of service and atmosphere because it was nice to have a mother-like figure asking you if you're doing okay and checking if you're still breathing after eating so much. Despite the somewhat small space, the restaurant welcomes regulars who come in every week. We think this is because of the welcoming atmosphere, thanks to Katherine and her staff, and of course, the homemade American meal its patrons feast on.
I'm Batman (kind of)

» This past month, we saw the release of what was possibly the best movie featuring the Caped Crusader: The Lego Batman Movie (yeah, move over, Christopher Nolan). While we everyday people don't have the skills nor the money to become the Dark Knight, these gadgets may bring us ever-so-slightly closer to being the masked vigilante Bangkok needs. Not included: Batsuit with batnipples and tragic origin story.
