Bangkok for the next Trump-Kim talks?

Oped, Suthichai Yoon, Published on 06/08/2025

» Some might call it improbable. Others might say it's unrealistic. But proposing Bangkok as the host city for the next summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is neither fantasy nor wishful thinking -- it's a logical, geopolitically sound proposal rooted in history and diplomacy.

Vietnam: Fifty years since the Fall of Saigon

Oped, John J. Metzler, Published on 30/04/2025

» Fifty years ago, on April 30, 1975, North Vietnamese military units surged into Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, forcibly reuniting the country, thus ending 20 years of conflict.

All talk, no dialogue on Asian security

Oped, Richard Maude, Published on 10/06/2023

» The International Institute for Strategic Studies' Shangri-La Dialogue has wrapped up its meeting in Singapore. The context for this year's summit was not propitious: Russia's bloody invasion of Ukraine grinds on, while Chinese President Xi Jinping continues his uncompromising approach to global affairs.

Striving for substance over theatre

News, Leif-Eric Easley, Published on 25/02/2019

» The 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty, and hopes have been raised that this week's second US-North Korea summit may begin a process towards formally resolving the conflict.

South Korea is wooing Asean and India

News, Kavi Chongkittavorn, Published on 17/07/2018

» For the first time since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War, South Korea, under the helm of President Moon Jae-in, has effectively been embedded in the regional scheme of things --political/security, economic and social/cultural. The country's previous four presidents -- Kim Dae-jung, Roh Moo-hyun, Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye -- tried to do the same but sadly they repeatedly failed. Every time these leaders wanted to focus on Southeast Asia and South Asia, something happened in the Northeast, the Korean Peninsula in particular, that immediately distracted them. They became mesmerised and forgot the region. There was no consistency whatsoever.

From inside North Korea, clues about Kim's agenda

News, Katharine HS Moon, Published on 07/06/2018

» It's been a roller coaster ride for anyone following plans for a June 12 summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un. The actors were contradictory, the stage sets numerous and the messages chaotic. Within days of Mr Trump's May 24 cancellation of the Singapore meeting -- and then the withdrawal of his withdrawal -- President Moon Jae-in of South Korea met with the US president in Washington with the North Korean leader on the northern side of the demilitarised zone (DMZ) to help keep the summit alive. Meanwhile, US officials flew to the DMZ and Singapore and a top North Korean official came to New York to plan (again) for the encounter.

Two Koreas saga: Keep your fingers crossed

News, Kavi Chongkittavorn, Published on 20/03/2018

» When the two leaders from Korea meet in Panmunjom later next month, new histories of East Asia will be narrated and written. North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un will travel from Pyongyang to the demilitarised zone at Panmunjom. His car will pass the Panmon Gak on the northern side and proceed to cross the DMZ line to the Peace House (Pyeonghwa jib) a few metres away southward. With South Korean President Moon Jae-in waiting there, he will greet his younger counterpart once he arrives with a big smile. Before the two shake hands, Mr Kim will by then have already made history as the first North Korean leader to step foot on South Korea since the war ended in 1953.
