Cafe with a good cause

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 29/12/2017

» It's not everyday that your meal comes with a healthy helping of social awareness. To my best knowledge, Dine In The Dark at Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit hires blind staff, while KFC employed deaf staff at three of their branches several years ago.

Throw out the cookbook

» Bangkok has an endless supply of food that can both delight and surprise you. In addition to croissant taiyaki, cone pizza, cronuts and croffles, there are other extraordinary edibles that should pique your appetite and curiosity. To help you expand your horizons (and waistlines), we've scouted the city for eateries that serve food sprinkled with curiosity, from tom yum congee to green curry pizza. They are listed in no particular order. Bon appetit!

Hark, the herald taco sings

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 25/12/2015

» Two Angels Tacos food truck brings LA-style tacos to Bangkok (hence the name). LA-born Pattanapong Sukduang partnered with Le Cordon Bleu grad Chris Ostray to open this food truck approximately six months ago. A blackboard menu written in chalk is placed over the bar in front of the cooking station. Several backless stools are available, but this is no place to linger.

Meet the Forkers

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 28/08/2015

» Forkers, a food truck specialising in pasta, has been popping up at various events since January. It’s the brainchild of six partners, one being chef Phoom, who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu Dusit and runs restaurant i-Taste, on Sathon Soi 8. So rest assured, there’s no substituting ketchup for tomato sauce here.

Cafés and curiosity

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 29/05/2015

» Bangkok is home to a cavalcade of cafes, but there aren't many that stand out in terms of concept. From a hangout for skateboarders to a witch's coven, we've searched every nook and cranny of the capital city for nine cafes that should pique your curiosity.

Down the rabbit hole

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 24/10/2014

» THE SET-UP: A foodie's adventure involves drinking, eating and changing in size much like that of the famous Alice from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (well, minus all the peculiar creatures and the fantasy world, unless you're eating at a late-night food stall).

Dainty delights

» People whose stomachs have a separate compartment for dessert can skip their main course and go straight for the various sweet options on offer at Delish. Opened in February, the venue offers an airy feel and array of bakery items to satisfy your sweet tooth. The large windows and skylight brighten up the venue with natural light. The adorable atmosphere seemingly implies you won’t be judged if you sip your tea with your pinky sticking out. There’s a big kitchen island where baking classes take place. The dainty decor draws in Japanese and Korean housewives and schoolgirls during weekdays while the weekends see Thai families.

Tiny cup, big flavours

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 18/04/2014

» There comes a time when moo ping and canned coffee just won’t do for breakfast anymore and you need real food to start your day (or nurse your hangover). A recent entry to the early birds’ sector is Tiny Cup Cafe which prides itself on breakfast items, baked goods and booster smoothies (and quite rightfully so). Their other source of pride should be the venue’s quaint atmosphere which, unlike what your bed partner looks like first thing in the morning, is cute and inviting. There’s a private room with a sky light that can comfortably accommodate about eight people on the mezzanine level and we think it’s perfect for brunching with friends. Even the bathroom is cute. Given the adorable atmosphere, no wonder Japanese housewives are among the regulars on weekdays. The other weekday regulars are people who live in nearby condos and freelancers. The weekend sees groups of girls and families.

Mother knows best

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 07/03/2014

» Apart from yourself, your mother is perhaps the only other person who knows what you can and can’t eat. One mother’s love for her child who is allergic to gluten, dairy and eggs has given birth to Theera — a new place that offers safe treats for people who are averse to certain foods as well as wholesome dishes made with healthy twists. The cosy atmosphere should make you feel at home as you wait for your order to the tune of a microwave oven ping, the opening and closing of a refrigerator door, and the savoury scent of waffles being made from the open kitchen (the only thing missing is your mum’s breakfast call). One half of the patrons of this one-month old place are white-collar expats, the other are white-collar Thais.
