The girl behind the paintings

Guru, Narada Sai-ngam, Published on 26/05/2017

» Even though it's located on the edge of Bangkok, we made sure we were there at the opening of Anchalee "Ja" Arayapongpanit's art exhibition at ARDEL Gallery of Modern Art. This is her third solo show and it's named "Thriller and Horror". Her artworks are distinctive through their strong portrayal of women, essentially big-eyed cartoon versions of the artist herself. This time round, Ja put herself inside her favourite movie scenes from thriller and horror genres. The shy artist talked to us about the messages behind her paintings which are on display at ARDEL Gallery of Modern Art (goo.gl/iQDoq8) until June 25. Some of them have already been sold.

On Dec 21, fans of this impressionist artist can enjoy his latest works at the Alex Face Alive Exhibition, held at the Bangkok Citycity Gallery, in the south Sathorn area. The exhibition will run until February.

Iron man

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 10/06/2016

» Banjerd Lekkong, who grew up in his father's garage and whose intricate iron-welded sculptures are being exhibited in a New York gallery, is an outlier among Thai artists. The 47-year-old did not graduate from any art school -- neither Poh Chang or Silpakorn University, the most respected training grounds for local artists. His works have never been displayed in a local museum or gallery. Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre (BACC) turned down his proposal for an exhibition. Private galleries did the same. The only show he had was a brief display at Amarin Plaza, a shopping mall.

The new Brahmins

» A man dressed in white blew into a conch as if it were a horn. Joss sticks were burning. Heads bowed but people's lips were praying. A screenplay on a golden tray was engulfed in a cloud of white smoke. Surrounding the tray was a feast which included a pig's head, Thai golden desserts, fruit, boiled eggs and seafood.
