Professional hosts are examining how to safely distance yet offer hospitable warmth without turning everything into a set from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Careful of that beak

B Magazine, Apurva Manek, Published on 05/08/2018

» During my first and only birding trip so far this year, when I visited Singapore in April, we spotted this bird right near the entrance of the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. It was perched up a tree with its back facing us. Like all photographers do, I prayed for the Stork-billed Kingfisher, as it is known, to turn its head so that I could see its eyes, form a connection and take a picture.

Pretty pin-up poster birds

B Magazine, Apurva Manek, Published on 22/07/2018

» I am a big lover of kingfishers. They come in such beautiful colours, they are simply fascinating and make for great pin-up bird posters. Most often than not, when I have stepped out for birding in Vietnam, and recently in Singapore and Philippines, I have spotted this bird. Once a person has heard the loud shrill call of the collared kingfisher, it's difficult not to recognise it the next time over.

The birds laughing all the way to the nest

B Magazine, Apurva Manek, Published on 08/07/2018

» White-crested laughing thrushes are noisy, social birds who occasionally burst into loud calls that sound just like laughter. It is this laughter like loud calls that lends this species its name. They also sport a signature white hood and raised crest. They are also easily recognisable due to their broad and elongated black eye-mask, which reminds me of a pirate.

A Kite which eats on the go

» I am sure most of us who watch movies have heard the shrill, ominous, threatening call of a raptor, to accompany an action scene or a scene in the desert.

Spot me a pretty babbler

» The small and dainty Silver Eared Mesia is a beautiful bird with a very striking mix of colours on its plumage. The plumage has red, yellow, orange, grey, silver, red, and black. The mesia is found in South East Asia. These pictures were shot in Vietnam. This bird has a silver patch behind its eyes which gives it the name "silver eared". They belong to the family of Leiothrix.

Brains and beauty on display in nest

B Magazine, Apurva Manek, Published on 06/05/2018

» In my life, I have seen many different species of bulbuls -- red-whiskered bulbul, red-vented bulbul, yellow-vented bulbul and streak-eared bulbul to name a few. All of them are beautiful birds. However, my latest encounter with the streak-eared bulbul has left me especially in awe of their intelligence, parental duties and protective nature towards their offspring.

The bashful hopping singer

B Magazine, Apurva Manek, Published on 22/04/2018

» The greater coucal is a very attractive bird with its deep ruby red eyes, black and purplish plumage all over except for the wings and back. The wings and back are chestnut brown. Its long thick tail is a glossy dark green. The contrast between chestnut and black is very conspicuous in adults. It has strong legs and feet which are darkish grey. Both sexes look similar making it difficult to distinguish the male from the female. They have a thick strong black bill.
