This is war

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 20/08/2021

» Money Heist, otherwise known as La casa de papel in its native country of Spain, has grown to become an unexpected worldwide phenomenon. Originally planned as a limited two-part series, global streaming service Netflix has catapulted it to international acclaim, which has garnered it millions of fans, who now anxiously await the show's conclusion. With the arrival of the first volume of the final part on Sept 3, Guru speaks to Pedro Alonso, who plays the cunning and seemingly immortal Berlin, about the final episodes.

The titles of 2021

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 05/03/2021

» We might already be in the third month of the year, but sadly, not a lot of exciting games have been released (except for one which is the first game on this list). The list of interesting titles seems to be slimmer than previous years, probably due to the situation. Nevertheless, these are the titles worth keeping an eye on. Fingers crossed none of them turn out to be the Cyberpunk of 2021.

Let me entertain you

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 24/04/2020

» Welcome to the nth week of quarantine! The good news is we're still here. The bad news is "here" is getting a little too boring for our tastes. Oh, the joys of being able to café hop along Thong Lor, watch a movie in a cinema or maybe just stroll mindlessly around Siam.

Together at home

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 27/03/2020

» Staying home, barely going out, staying in your PJs for the majority of the day, taking them off to shower some time in the afternoon only to change into fresh cleaner PJs -- welcome to the new normal. I forgot to mention the part where you work from home but let's be honest, are you really working from home or did you just breeze past one season of a TV show you're now re-watching for the fourth time? Nevertheless, we all seem to be confined to our homes for the foreseeable future. You may be the introvert of introverts but even you may get bored and stir-crazy being stuck in one place for a long time. Here are a number of things to give some levity to your lockdown.

The desolation of smog

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 25/01/2019

» The first month of 2019 has been completely obscured by the hazy descent of smog upon the Big Mango and while Bangkokians are no strangers to pollution, it seems that this may be worse than before. Each morning, we wake up to a smog-infested skyline and step out into the streets breathing in fresh pollution speckled with PM2.5 dust particles, which are dangerous and fine (size-wise, not hotness-wise). Pollution Control Department director-general Pralong Damrongthai said that this may last for another month or two -- with ups and downs -- and the PCD has admitted that spraying water into the air doesn't really help (but it's so much fun so let's continue). Expect Bangkok to look post apocalyptic for a while. But fear not dear readers, we are looking out for you. We've done our research (it's never too late) and we've got a few protips on how to survive the haze.

LIFE

Same same but different

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 01/09/2017

» We really did think we saw the last of the Uncharted series. After all, the fourth one was entitled Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, so we were pretty much convinced that Nathan Drake's treasure-hunting days were done. Well, that is sort of true. Drake, the central character of the past four games, is absent in this standalone expansion entitled Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. But is that necessarily a bad thing? Is Uncharted no longer Uncharted simply because Nathan Drake isn't there? Or is the game able to stand for itself and be a valid addition to the Uncharted franchise?
