Death wears a hat

» Those who've been following David Fincher's career for the last 30 years, would know that he's been consistently delivering really slick, stylish genre entertainment. Some may remember him from directing Madonna's music videos back in the early 90s, like Express Yourself and Vogue, or the hit biopic drama The Social Network (2010). But what really set Fincher as one of the most respected filmmakers today was his work oftentimes, in the thriller genre. It's where you really get to see his signature style at play. And along those lines, I'm talking about movies like Seven (1995) Zodiac (2007) Gone Girl (2014) or even some of the best episodes of crime series Mindhunter (2017). Now the director has returned again in the latest Netflix crime thriller The Killer where he reunited with writer Andrew Kevin Walker who penned the screenplay on Seven.

Netflix's latest original Do Revenge is another teen comedy presented on the platform time and time again, like The Kissing Booth series, To All The Boys I've Loved Before (2018) and Tall Girl (2019).

» The days of superheroes being limited to one ethnicity are over. In the past few years, it seems that Marvel and Disney have realised that audiences want more stars to look up to. Last year, we saw Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings become the latest record-breaking Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie that gave Asian actors an opportunity to be a superhero, the same that Black Panther (2018) and Captain Marvel (2019) did for black and female-led casts.

» The first thing that comes to mind when talking about Michael Bay movies are the explosions, gunfire and scenes of cars flipping or helicopters falling from the sky in slow-motion. The man is like a filmmaker on steroids when it comes to big production. No matter how big or small the story is, Bay always finds a way to add explosions and make a big deal out of it. After his success in franchises like Bad Boys and Transformers, Bay has gone on to create the likes of Pain & Gain (2013) and 6 Underground (2019). His latest project, Ambulance, marks Bay's first directorial effort release since the pandemic began in 2020. Ambulance comes to local cinemas today, three weeks before North America where it is scheduled to release on April 8.

After the success of reunion specials that have aired recently, like the epic fantasy series Game Of Thrones or the 90s sitcom Friends, HBO has brought us another heartwarming special with Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return To Hogwarts, the highly anticipated retrospective special that is now streaming exclusively on HBO GO.
This Gyllenhaal watch can be enjoyed to the end

» Over the past few decades, we have seen Jake Gyllenhaal's massive transformation from being a Hollywood teenage heartthrob into one of the most diverse acting resumes around. Some of his best roles recently, usually revolve around high drama stories or within crime and thriller genres, like David Ayer's cop drama End Of Watch, Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners (2013) or Dan Gilroy's thriller Nightcrawler (2014). In between those years, Gyllenhaal's fun and expressive eyes became less reactive and more serious and grim. The Guilty, a new Netflix drama, feels almost like a continuation of that same persona by Gyllenhaal but with a unique and gripping story about a police officer at a 911 call centre in a high-stakes game against time to stop a kidnapping. It's a remake of the 2018 Danish film of the same name, directed by Antoine Fuqua of Training Day (2001), Brooklyn's Finest (2009) and Southpaw (2015) fame.
A poor farewell

» Even though Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, was a strong supporting character rather than a main title character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), she developed a great deal as one of the Avengers since her first appearance over a decade ago in Iron Man 2 (2010). So it's quite hard to believe that Black Widow finally got a solo adventure.
Bold and intoxicating
