How to help the world's poor most effectively

News, Bjorn Lomborg, Published on 22/12/2025

» As 2025 draws to a close, it's natural to turn our thoughts to the good we can do in the coming year -- not just for our families and communities, but for the world at large. The holidays are a moment not just for personal resolutions but for asking a bigger question: how can we help the world's poor as effectively as possible?

Narrative challenged

» Re: "Thailand's delicate stance with Israel", (Opinion, Dec 9). As a Jew living in Thailand for over 20 years, I must admit I was not happy with what I read. Indeed, found a number of statements to be offensive: The second paragraph implies that Israel's response to the terrorist attack on Oct 7, 2023, was "genocide" -- a term coined in 1944 to describe Hitler's campaign to exterminate all European Jews, and defined as "the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group".

China's bluster over Japan's Taiwan remarks

News, Published on 05/12/2025

» Beijing has gone rhetorically ballistic over comments by Japan's new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could constitute "a situation threatening Japan's survival" that thus could trigger a military response. Her statement poses uncharacteristically tough talk from Tokyo at a time when tensions are running high in the Far East.

Socialism's novel brand of nomenclature

Oped, Published on 18/11/2025

» On Nov 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall collapsed. On a very ordinary night, thousands of East Germans started crossing the dividing barrier between the communist East and capitalist West Berlin after the East German regime had suddenly opened tightly controlled border crossings. In a matter of hours, history was made. Throngs of people soon swamped the Wall and then started smashing the hated communist barrier into concrete rubble.

Southeast Asia squeezed by superpowers

News, Published on 15/11/2025

» Southeast Asian nations are in a bind. While the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (Asean) exporters face increasing pressure from US tariffs and heightened scrutiny of transshipments, their domestic markets are increasingly being dominated by Chinese goods.
