A sight for sore eyes

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 02/07/2021

» Art has been and still is a vital part of our life and history though it has evolved over the years. The Renaissance gave us legendary works of art like Da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Michelangelo's David. Fast forward to the present and we still view art regularly albeit in different forms -- now on a 55in. OLed TV. Hey, Netflix movies and shows are still work of art, don't judge. I understand that there is a vast difference between sitting on your couch and going to a gallery or an exhibition. Guru provides you, dear readers with refreshing breaks like a list of new galleries that are worth your time.

Father, gentleman, thief

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 11/06/2021

» Mystery shrouded Netflix's original TV show Lupin the first time it was announced as people wondered if this was going to be a modern version of the famous gentleman burglar a la BBC's Sherlock Holmes. But upon its release in January 2020, audiences were more than pleased and riveted at the story of Assane Diop, who employs the fictional thief's strategies, to go after the man who framed his father.

Dreamworld

» If you heard the name "My Life As Ali Thomas", the first thing you'd probably say is "Wait, that's a name?" Yes, it's the name of a Thai indie-folk rock band that writes songs in English, and though the name is odd, the story behind it makes sense.

Super brother

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 02/10/2020

» The name Sherlock Holmes is synonymous to being eccentric, weird and a genius that no one can match. Aside from the original novels, there have been many versions of the famous detective. However, in Enola Holmes, he plays a supporting character and tries to help his sister, Enola, make her way in a world that's trying to dictate who she wants to be. And who better to fill the shoes of the detective this time around than the dashing Henry Cavill? Guru spoke to Cavill about his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes and working with Millie Bobby Brown.

Twist & sounds

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 24/07/2020

» Now that we're able to go out and about again, watching a film about a house haunted by secrets and a mysterious ghost shouldn't be too bad, right? The Maid is the first Thai-produced Netflix horror film that was released a week ago, starring Teerapat Sajakul and Sawika "Pinky" Chaiyadech. Though the film seems like a straightforward horror story featuring a baby-faced and naive main character, a mysterious rich couple and a terrifying ghost out for blood, it quickly gives you a bunch of twists to keep you on the edge of your seat, as well as a couple of jump scares, all achieved with the help of terrifying visuals and bone-chilling sound design. Guru spoke to Lee Thongkham, the film's director and writer, and Traithep Wongpaiboon, who was the sound post-production supervisor, about the film and what role sound plays in getting audiences scared.

Yesterday, today & forever

» It doesn't matter whether you're a kid or you're seasoned in your years: if you haven't been living under a rock and you love movies, you know who Tom Hanks is and you love him. What's not to love? He voiced a cowboy that takes us back to our childhood, played a lovable slow-witted man who taught us that life is like a box of chocolates and he's also led us through the hells of World War II during D-Day. He returns to that era of history in his new film, Greyhound, which he stars in and also wrote the screenplay for. He plays Captain Ernie Krause who helms the titular ship and is also leading a number of ships through a dangerous part of the Atlantic Ocean. Guru was able to join a digital press conference where he talks about the parallels between World War II and how Covid has affected film-making.

Morals & immortals

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/07/2020

» The prospect of being immortal may seem like a good idea at first, but the immortals of Netflix's new film, The Old Guard, are dealing with hundreds -- some even thousands -- of years' worth of baggage while being hunted down. Based on the graphic novel of the same name, the film follows Andromache of Scythia aka Andy and her group of immortal mercenaries, who have been doing assignments all throughout history but managing to keep their existence unknown. That is, until Copley and Merrick show up, an ex-CIA agent and a pharma company CEO who wants to capture them because they may have the genetic key that will provide a solution to the world's sicknesses. Guru spoke to Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays Copley; Harry Melling, who plays Merrick; and the three immortal mercenaries: Marwan Kenzari, Matthias Schoenaerts and Luca Marinelli.

Witchers & monsters

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 27/12/2019

» The Witcher, which was released last week on Netflix, follows Geralt of Rivia, played by the ridiculously good-looking Henry Cavill, a mutated monster-hunter who prefers keeping to himself though destiny has other plans. We attended the show's fan event in Manila, the Philippines, where we sat down with the show's showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who has also worked on The Umbrella Academy and Daredevil, to talk about The Witcher.
