The heat is on

» Ginger and broccoli in pad see eiw, Thai basil and tamarind sauce in som tam, and peanut butter drenched in every stir-fry possible. If you've ever visited YouTube in search of how-tos on Thai cookery, it's a given you've done some head-scratching, if not outright offensive interpretations of beloved dishes.

» 1. Jam Ciné Club is back for November under the theme "Dystopia", with a focus on sci-fi films from the 60s and 70s with disturbing relevance today. This Wednesday, the film to be screened is Logan's Run (1976). Set in the year 2274, the film focuses on an idyllic sci-fi future where everyone is made to believe that life ends at the age of 30. As is true of all sci-fi dystopias, however, things aren't always as they seem, causing various members of society to flee from the utopia upon turning 30. Logan, a law enforcement officer, goes undercover to expose the hideout of these "runners", only to find himself a champion of their cause. Screenings start at 8pm, and is free for anyone interested.

» 1 Vive La France! From this month forward, citizens of Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, India and Russia won't have to wait 10 days for their visa delivery time. The French government has now significantly reduced visa delivery times to merely 48 hours in order to try to increase the number of foreign tourists following a dramatic dip due to the wave of terrorist attacks in 2016. This year, the country is targeting 89 million tourists from 83 million last year, and plans to bring in 100 million tourists in 2020.

Grownup playgrounds

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/11/2017

» Let's all be honest for a second. This is a safe space. No one's judging anyone. Let's all admit this: when we look at kids' playgrounds, we adults also want in on the action. Who doesn't want to ride down that awesome tube slide? Or get lost in a sea of plastic balls? Or crawl into one of those tunnels? But hey, adults aren't allowed in kids' playgrounds because that's not what grownups are supposed to do -- and yes, the playground would probably not be able to handle an adult's weight. While we do agree that we as grownups shouldn't go playing in kiddie playgrounds, that doesn't mean we shouldn't have playgrounds of our own. This week, we've compiled a number of adult playgrounds (not the kind you're thinking) that we grownups can go to for a bit of fun and excitement.
