Clubhead pace is the secret weapon today

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 08/04/2026

» Your ball is in what the Rules call "temporary water." You may play your ball as it lies or take free relief. You take free relief by finding the nearest point of complete relief where you are clear of the puddle and then drop your original ball away from the puddle and within one club-length of that point, not nearer the hole. You may also take relief from a puddle of water if your ball is in a bunker.

One wrong score for a hole can end your round

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 15/10/2025

» If you return a scorecard with a wrong score for a hole; the score you entered stands if it was higher than your actual score. However, you are disqualified if you return a score that is lower than your actual score or if you fail to return a score for a hole. Putting down a lower score is considered a serious breach of the rules and results in disqualification, unless an unknown penalty was the cause. Some professional tours have adopted a rule that gives players a 15-minute window to correct an incorrect score after leaving the scoring area.

Old tricks and new science in green reading

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 27/08/2025

» I have to be honest and say that the 'Feet Feeling Method' for finding the break in a putt has never excited me. This involves using your feet to feel the slope of the green while you walk around it. The Plumb Bob Method in finding the line of any putt involves using your putter as a plumb line to judge the slope. To do this, you need to stand behind your ball, at a right angle to the hole, and hold up your putter so it covers the ball. Then, you align the shaft of your putter with the ball. If the shaft seems to tilt to one side, it indicates that the green also slopes in that direction and you then allow for this.

Douglas Brasier inducted into Sweden's Hall of Fame

» A good drill for developing the feel for distance is to putt a ball 30 feet. Then putt the next one 29 feet. Then 28 feet, and so on. An average golfer misses short putts because of fear or a lack of concentration. Instead of just stroking the putt into the hole, he or she is thinking about any number of things -- including other players who are watching for the result. Don't guide short putts into the hole, the right way is to approach a short putt from behind and line it up. If you decide it breaks two inches left of the cup, then that's where you want to strike it -- not jerk it into the hole.

Develop right muscles with weighted club

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 28/02/2024

» I'm asked regularly on how you put backspin on iron shots. The obvious answer is that if you hit the ball solidly, the loft of the club will automatically put backspin on it. But my answer is invariably too simple, as the average golfer thinks there's a secret that makes a middle-iron shot land on the green and dance backwards.

Let your left heel come up for real free flowing swing

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 21/02/2024

» A retired golfer has the time to practise the short game. Short shots don't require strength or flexibility. Certainly, the older golfer can't hit the ball as far as the younger player but once you reach the fringe of the green young and old become no worse than equals. Nothing sharpens your focus and improves your touch if you just use one ball in practice for getting up and down.

Like chess, it is forever challenging

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 31/01/2024

» The term 'average golfer' is often used but sometimes l wonder, what is the average golfer. I read somewhere that statistics show that the average male golfer shoots around 92. Personally, l find this hard to believe. Playing from stringent tees and holing every putt -- most golfers won't break 100.

Turn on axis instead of lateral slide

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 19/07/2023

» By moving your left knee forward, the hips are naturally turned back and allow for the backswing to occur. By making sure the kneecap doesn't move laterally, you are limiting the overall movement of your lower body, and in doing so promoting a more reliable and compact swing.
