Qualifier turns into reality check

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 29/04/2026

» It was with some trepidation that I recently attempted to qualify for the US Open. I emptied my savings account and went and had a look at Aronimink Golf Club located just outside of Philadelphia in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. The club has a rich history dating back to 1896. In 1926, Aronimink acquired 300 acres in Newtown Square and commissioned Donald Ross to design this historic golf course. On Memorial Day of 1928, the club moved into the current clubhouse.

Smart play! Time to know your bunker relief options

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 04/03/2026

» There is no penalty for accidentally hitting the ball twice during a single stroke. If a player's club strikes the ball more than once, it only counts as one stroke, and the ball is played as it lies.

» Drop a golf ball when taking free or penalty relief -- for example; a hazard, unplayable lie or abnormal conditions within a defined relief area. Place a ball back after previously marking it and lifting it from the green, replacing it after it moves, or cleaning it on the putting green.

One wrong score for a hole can end your round

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 15/10/2025

» If you return a scorecard with a wrong score for a hole; the score you entered stands if it was higher than your actual score. However, you are disqualified if you return a score that is lower than your actual score or if you fail to return a score for a hole. Putting down a lower score is considered a serious breach of the rules and results in disqualification, unless an unknown penalty was the cause. Some professional tours have adopted a rule that gives players a 15-minute window to correct an incorrect score after leaving the scoring area.

» Good decisions on the golf course make up a good score and therefore allows you to feel good about yourself. Well thought out actions on the links will express your talents, skills, and knowledge. A good decision will silence many when you come in with a good score, and move you closer to your golfing goals. Your frustrations and anger disperse with a good decision on the golf course.

Turn your practice into muscle memory

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 29/01/2025

» Let's face it, the golf swing is over in a flash and it's impossible to think of every movement that must be carried out in order to hit a good shot. For example, the backswing and downswing, if analysed in slow motion, would make a trip to the moon easier to organise and fully understand.

Balance matters more than style in golf

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 28/08/2024

» Posing after a good shot is fine to do on the driving range because you should know how it feels. But on the course it doesn't really matter. If you hit a good shot and fall back a little or don't quite hold your balance l feel that this is okay during a round. There's no points for style on the course as the object of the game is getting the ball as close as you can to your target.

The science behind ball positioning

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 08/05/2024

» The position of the ball is second only to the grip, and mistakes in grip and ball position are mistakes made before the swing that may ruin any thoughts of a good swing even before you've swung. Many golf coaches teach that the ball should be played off the left heel for all shots however, I'm not a fan of this doctrine as only very good players can do this off good lies. But if you play the ball off your left heel with a 9-iron, you must have a very fast hip shift to meet the club with the ball on the downswing.
