Clubhead pace is the secret weapon today

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 08/04/2026

» Your ball is in what the Rules call "temporary water." You may play your ball as it lies or take free relief. You take free relief by finding the nearest point of complete relief where you are clear of the puddle and then drop your original ball away from the puddle and within one club-length of that point, not nearer the hole. You may also take relief from a puddle of water if your ball is in a bunker.

Tweaks that make big difference

» Stand tall and align your posture. A golf swing is a full-body motion and this is the huge difference between a new golfer and one with experience. The efficient transfer of energy during a swing is the main movement that identifies a good and useless golfer. Those who can play well are able to harness all of their rotational power from their hips, shoulders, and legs. Your spine should align with your knees, and the balls of your feet when hitting a tee shot. Keeping your posture straight will allow more consistent drives and longer shots.

How the original 13 rules shaped game

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 25/09/2024

» I'm always getting questions regarding the rules, and I answer them as best l can however, as we all know -- our rules can be somewhat complicated and catching out even the world's best players. Therefore, it's interesting to see how simple & refreshingly uncomplicated they were back in the day.

Wedge wisdom: Perfecting your pitch and chip skills

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 21/08/2024

» There's no reason why a reasonable golfer should take more than three to get down from 150 yards. If you spend most of your practice time hitting a 7-, 6- or 5-iron whichever you use for a 150-yard shot, you should hit the middle of the green and now and again sometimes the ball will roll up close to the hole and make you look good.

Why hitting chip shots is the best warm-up

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 19/06/2024

» The main difference in swinging a 7-iron and a driver is that you want to hit your driver slightly on the upswing, or at the lowest point of the swing. There are coaches who want their students to practise with a 3-iron thinking that if they can hit a 3-iron all others will be a piece of cake. Perhaps this is true, but this could be looked at as back to front -- because it's easier to learn to hit a good 7-iron first, so when moving to a 3-iron it would not be an issue.

7-iron can transform your game

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 12/06/2024

» Finish with your forearms in front of you. A good finish shows what has gone on before it, let your head come up to look at the good shot. On your follow-through, the right foot merely helps to hold your balance. If you lose your balance whilst trying to do a perfect swing it is probably because your grip is too weak or too tight or both.

It's better to take the 7-iron than 6-iron and hit it harder

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 13/03/2024

» We seldom hit our middle-iron approach shots past the pin and there are those who preach hitting one club stronger, for example if the shot calls for a 7-iron, choose a 6-iron instead and hit it easier. However, l feel that it's better to take the 7-iron and hit it harder with the thought of getting the ball all the way to the hole.

Keeping your head down for too long will hinder swing

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 14/02/2024

» A golfing myth is that we must keep our heads down -- in fact, keeping it down too long will hinder your swing. Keeping your head down too long prevents a good follow-through because a golfer can't swing past hip-high with the head down and not give up something good in the finish to do it.

Use the loft of wood to your advantage

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 28/06/2023

» Think about executing a fairway wood this way -- if your practice swings on the range don't sweep and touch the ground, you are practising topping it!
