When driving the ball well, most of us play a slight draw, so no matter what the conditions, we'll always have this natural shape. Getting off the tee is the hardest part of the game for new golfers. » It's not for the first time that I've mentioned how every golfer should have some sort of swing trigger to start off their swing. Many times, I've watched an average golfer take a few beautiful practice swings before approaching the ball, tensing up, then freezing for a few seconds before eventually executing a stiff looking swing that looks nothing like their practice swings.

» There's a little test you can do to ensure that when you set up over the ball everything is in the right place. See if you can rock backwards and forwards when addressing the ball, if you can, then your weight is correctly distributed. If you can only move your toes, then too much weight is on your heels. The reverse is also true. If you can only lift your heels your weight is too far forward.

» Slightly adjusting the position of your right foot will change the width of your stance and therefore you'll be able to hit the ball at different points on the arc of your swing. In a perfect world this would mean hitting the ball on a slightly ascending strike with the driver and a slightly descending blow with the irons.

» When faced with a downhill lie, straighten your downhill leg and flex a little the uphill leg to level the hips. Play the ball back towards your right foot. Sole your club on the ground and square the clubface, whilst aiming to the right to compensate for the inevitable natural flight movement of the ball flying left.

» What should your hips do when you swing? -- well, your right hip will move up and back as you take the club away from the ball, and then up into a solid position as the lower body starts to generate power. The left leg should remain a little flexed as the right straightens on the backswing. I have to mention here that straightening your right leg is not set in stone, and if it works better for you -- keep a little spring in it.
