» Should you play a "wrong ball" -- in other words any other ball other than yours -- you'll incur a penalty of two strokes in stroke play or loss of hole in match play. You must correct the error by playing your original ball before teeing off on the next hole, or you face disqualification. Strokes made with the wrong ball do not count.

» Standing correctly to the ball is obviously extremely important for consistency and there's a four-step exercise that will help you to do just that. Firstly, standing upright, hold the club directly out in front of you. Then flex your knees until, when looking down, you can see half of your feet. Carry on the exercise by dropping your arms without bending forward, and then lastly, bend from your hips and stick your bottom out slightly. When the club touches the ground, Hey Presto, you will be in the perfect position from which to start a good swing.

» Do you rely on a trigger that helps to start your swing? Most of us do, as it's hard to move away from the ball and set things in motion without having something that will start off your swing. How often have you watched a golfer take a few beautiful practice swings before approaching the ball, then tenses up, and freezes for a while before executing a stiff, jerky swing that looks nothing like their practice swings.

» As we all know the golf swing looks like one movement, but it's actually made up of many movements all working together. This means that if the clubface is just a little bit off the result is going to grow into a large error by the time the ball comes to rest. If the face is two or three degrees off at impact, the ball will be 20-30 yards off at 200 yards.

» Negative thoughts and carelessness cause more missed putts than any other -- or four-foot putt will always go in if you stroke the ball in the sweet spot of the putter face, providing you are aimed at the centre of the cup.

» When practising on the putting green, always choose a level area, or perhaps somewhere where you'll be putting slightly uphill. It's true that a ball that never reaches the cup never goes in, but neither does the ball that goes past it.

» Finish with your forearms in front of you. A good finish shows what has gone on before it, let your head come up to look at the good shot. On your follow-through, the right foot merely helps to hold your balance. If you lose your balance whilst trying to do a perfect swing it is probably because your grip is too weak or too tight or both.
