» Those of us getting on in life usually have more time to play but suffer from less flexibility, less range of motion and less speed. It's a sad combination, especially when your brain still remembers the swing you used to have.

» Are you having problems with pitch shots around the green, perhaps you're undecided to hit it high or low or make it stop quickly. Here's a way of making the shot selection and execution process simpler.

» In a perfect world here's what happens when we wind up away from the ball. Think of your belly button turning gradually to the right and, in unison, allow your body weight to shift by slightly moving your right heel. This allows for a subtle movement in your hips before they begin to turn. When the hips begin to fully turn your shoulders also start to rotate and your left shoulder moves down and across slightly and at right angles to the axis of your spine.

» When setting up try to get the feeling that your hips are positioned so that there is a slight upward tilt in the direction of where you're trying to hit the ball. The feeling is that your left hip should feel that it's slightly higher than your right. Let's think about this for a minute as the overall feeling of your right side being set lower than your left comes because your right hand is positioned below your left on the club.

» Golfers who are on the back nine of their lives, or in other words getting old and crumpled, can still enjoy a round of golf if they stop reminiscing of earlier days of smacking the ball way down the middle, with seamlessly no effort at all.

» Slicing is caused by the hands leading the head of the club. Tenseness plays a big role in the clubface being open at impact. Anyone who is slicing realises that the harder they try to hit the more they will slice.

» Turning away from the ball and then back through it again is, in reality, a simple movement that has been made to seem complicated by differing teaching theories.

» The position of the ball is second only to the grip, and mistakes in grip and ball position are mistakes made before the swing that may ruin any thoughts of a good swing even before you've swung. Many golf coaches teach that the ball should be played off the left heel for all shots however, I'm not a fan of this doctrine as only very good players can do this off good lies. But if you play the ball off your left heel with a 9-iron, you must have a very fast hip shift to meet the club with the ball on the downswing.

» A golfing myth is that we must keep our heads down -- in fact, keeping it down too long will hinder your swing. Keeping your head down too long prevents a good follow-through because a golfer can't swing past hip-high with the head down and not give up something good in the finish to do it.

» If you have ever seen Ben Hogan set up to hit a ball, you'll notice that his elbows were pointing directly at the corresponding hip.
