» When it comes to hitting it long off the tee, go with your normal shot shape. When driving the ball well, most of us play a slight draw, so no matter what the conditions, we'll always have this natural shape. Getting off the tee is the hardest part of the game for new golfers. Showing up to the range and hitting your driver for hours on end won't do much to improve your golf game. This is exactly why practice games are so effective. They simulate real pressure that you will feel on the course and encourage you to practise like you play.

The efficient transfer of energy during a swing is the main movement that identifies a good and useless golfer. Those who can play well are able to harness all of their rotational power from their hips, shoulders, and legs. Your spine should align with your knees, and the balls of your feet when hitting a tee shot. Keeping your posture straight will allow more consistent drives and longer shots.

» Women's clubs are usually lighter than men's, which helps generate a faster swing. The downside is that women sometimes have a more challenging time making good contact with the ball with these lighter clubs. Regardless of using men's or ladies' clubs when swinging, imagine that the club is heavy in your hands on the downswing to make better contact with the ground and the ball. You'll also generate more clubhead speed and overall carry distance.

» Always try and work on your posture and alignment, as maintaining good posture throughout your swing is an important ingredient for the making of good shots. Tilt your upper body slightly forward from the hips, maintaining a straight spine angle. Use your core for stability and control throughout your swing. Avoid slouching or arching your back excessively, as this can affect your swing mechanics and lead to inconsistent ball striking.

» Most of us who've been playing for a long time picked up the basics of the game from watching carefully the swings of good players. Imitation has started many of us off in the game but this alone does not allow you to fully understand the swings inner workings. I must be honest here and say that watching only good swings will not make a good player. There is no shortcut, that I'm aware of, that will make a good player other than some hard work on the practice range. Imagining a nice-looking swing whilst hitting balls will help but we're all made differently, and as one well known player once told me 'we all have to work out what works on the course through blood, sweat and tears' so all the many movements required becomes muscle memory.

» Your knees and hips should be more or less parallel to the line of where you're trying to hit the ball; however, a fade or draw will need a little adjustment. Your shoulders should have the feeling of being a touch open and your right arm the same height as your left or even ever so slightly higher than your left.

» There's a little test you can do to ensure that when you set up over the ball everything is in the right place. See if you can rock backwards and forwards when addressing the ball, if you can, then your weight is correctly distributed. If you can only move your toes, then too much weight is on your heels. The reverse is also true. If you can only lift your heels your weight is too far forward.

» In a perfect world here's what happens when we wind up away from the ball. Think of your belly button turning gradually to the right and, in unison, allow your body weight to shift by slightly moving your right heel. This allows for a subtle movement in your hips before they begin to turn. When the hips begin to fully turn your shoulders also start to rotate and your left shoulder moves down and across slightly and at right angles to the axis of your spine.

» When setting up try to get the feeling that your hips are positioned so that there is a slight upward tilt in the direction of where you're trying to hit the ball. The feeling is that your left hip should feel that it's slightly higher than your right. Let's think about this for a minute as the overall feeling of your right side being set lower than your left comes because your right hand is positioned below your left on the club.
