Unplayable lies: Know the three relief options

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 04/02/2026

» You have basically three options if your golf ball finds itself in an unplayable lie. An unplayable lie allows a golfer to take relief almost anywhere on the course but comes with a one-stroke penalty, excluding penalty areas. The player is the sole judge of whether a ball is unplayable. The 3-options for relief are -- stroke-and-distance, back-on-the-line, or lateral relief within two club-lengths of where the ball is at rest.

Tweaks that make big difference

» Stand tall and align your posture. A golf swing is a full-body motion and this is the huge difference between a new golfer and one with experience. The efficient transfer of energy during a swing is the main movement that identifies a good and useless golfer. Those who can play well are able to harness all of their rotational power from their hips, shoulders, and legs. Your spine should align with your knees, and the balls of your feet when hitting a tee shot. Keeping your posture straight will allow more consistent drives and longer shots.

How to create a flawless foundation for good swing

» In a perfect world, at the top of your backswing, the club should be parallel to the ground and pointing towards the target. Your lead arm should be extended, with your wrists hinging naturally to create a 90-degree angle between the club shaft and your left arm.

Alignment the secret to better swing

» Your knees and hips should be more or less parallel to the line of where you're trying to hit the ball; however, a fade or draw will need a little adjustment. Your shoulders should have the feeling of being a touch open and your right arm the same height as your left or even ever so slightly higher than your left.

Master your putting and transform your game in '25

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 08/01/2025

» Let's start the New Year off with something very basic 'Putting' -- as whether we like it or not for the average golfer, half of golf is putting. Top players earning their living on Tour only use up around 26, 27 or 28 putts per round. This basically relates to two putts every other hole and just one putt for the hole in between.

Why hitting chip shots is the best warm-up

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 19/06/2024

» The main difference in swinging a 7-iron and a driver is that you want to hit your driver slightly on the upswing, or at the lowest point of the swing. There are coaches who want their students to practise with a 3-iron thinking that if they can hit a 3-iron all others will be a piece of cake. Perhaps this is true, but this could be looked at as back to front -- because it's easier to learn to hit a good 7-iron first, so when moving to a 3-iron it would not be an issue.

7-iron can transform your game

» Finish with your forearms in front of you. A good finish shows what has gone on before it, let your head come up to look at the good shot. On your follow-through, the right foot merely helps to hold your balance. If you lose your balance whilst trying to do a perfect swing it is probably because your grip is too weak or too tight or both.

The crucial role of foot positioning

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 15/05/2024

» To start any golf swing a forward press of some sort is required to start the action. Naturally we don't start many movements from a dead start. Your hands, hips, shoulders and legs will rock forward a little bit to help the reaction that gives the momentum needed for the backswing. This initiates the turn and the shift of the weight to the right foot; your hands will follow your turn into the backswing and your left heel will rise.

The key to success on the golf course

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 27/03/2024

» Rather than a relaxed feeling be 'at ease' on the golf course. Positive thinking on the course is an important ingredient in the recipe for good rounds and negative thoughts are pure poison for the golfer. You need to believe with all your heart that the shot you are about to hit will be a good one. For this you'll need complete confidence.

Bad shots are made before the club is swung

» Originality does not consist of saying what has never been said before; it's a knowledgeable golf coach saying what they know to be the truth.
