Mind the green for better play

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 25/03/2026

» If you lay down the flagstick, place it off the green to prevent doing any damage to the green and to hinder it from getting in the way of play. Generally, if there is no caddie, the player closest to the hole will be regarded as the one to look after and tend the flagstick when applicable. Try not to hang around after putting; therefore, after everyone has holed out, immediately walk to the next tee.

Golf made simple: Key rules every player should know

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 01/10/2025

» Carrying on with some basic 'easy to understand' golf rules that we all need to know well. To correctly drop a golf ball, you must release the ball from your hand at knee height, allowing it to fall straight down without touching your body or equipment before hitting the ground. The ball must then land and come to rest within the defined relief area for that required situation. Should it bounce away from the dropping area you can try two more times. If still unsuccessful -- you can then place the ball. If you drop the ball incorrectly, you simply must re-drop it without penalty, but you incur a penalty if you play the ball from a wrong place after dropping it.

Old tricks and new science in green reading

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 27/08/2025

» I have to be honest and say that the 'Feet Feeling Method' for finding the break in a putt has never excited me. This involves using your feet to feel the slope of the green while you walk around it. The Plumb Bob Method in finding the line of any putt involves using your putter as a plumb line to judge the slope. To do this, you need to stand behind your ball, at a right angle to the hole, and hold up your putter so it covers the ball. Then, you align the shaft of your putter with the ball. If the shaft seems to tilt to one side, it indicates that the green also slopes in that direction and you then allow for this.

Trigger is what every golfer needs for a perfect swing

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 09/07/2025

» It's not for the first time that I've mentioned how every golfer should have some sort of swing trigger to start off their swing. Many times, I've watched an average golfer take a few beautiful practice swings before approaching the ball, tensing up, then freezing for a few seconds before eventually executing a stiff looking swing that looks nothing like their practice swings.

Beat the heat! Smart tips for thriving

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 26/02/2025

» Let's face it, practising in Thailand's heat is not the most pleasurable of activities. Therefore, a little bit of thought needs to be implemented into the task of fine tuning or refining a new movement. Psychologically we must approach making a movement change, over a certain amount of time, with the realisation that there will be a measurable number of strange looking shots before improvement can be seen.

Straight talking is the need of the hour in golf

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 01/01/2025

» Please allow me once more to indulge in something different than my normal tip, as rather surprisingly my 'tongue in cheek' tip last week created a great response, which has made me think that some 'Roy Keane' straight talking is perhaps warranted within the business of golf at the moment. Particularly disappointing are those who lack the intestinal fortitude of expressing transparent views and honest reflections of the present state of golf. Candid comments would be refreshing to hear, rather than the 'go with the flow' mundane obligatory words they must utter because of their positions and roles within golf.

Shoulder tilt is the key to powerful swings

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 11/12/2024

» When at the top of our swings our shoulders should be tilted from the top, not level as l see sometimes. Most golfers want to hit the ball long, and tilting your shoulders as we turn them will help tremendously. Shift your hips towards your target on your downswing so that your tailbone finishes up closer to the target. But your head should not get closer to the target or go too far over the back foot.

Staying in the swing beyond 60

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 04/12/2024

» As l edge slowly and carefully out of bed whilst discovering new twinges of pain, the reality of having to smack a little ball around a course later in the day becomes a worrying harsh reality.

Out of bounds: Mastering thoughts for better rounds on course

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 27/11/2024

» The following is from Dr Brasier's experiences of many rounds of golf with many strange people. Golfers don't have a particular tool for creating good rounds, or from their thoughts as they create a good score. All thoughts we have in our minds are not ours. Hidden things from the subconscious are just thoughts. For example, fear is a thought, blocking something out is a thought, habit is a thought, apprehension of a particular course, shot or opponent is a thought. Several kinds of anxieties, any "What if" -- these are also thoughts.

How mental barriers affect a player's game

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 06/11/2024

» The psychological area that comes with the game of golf is hugely underestimated. If you don't think hard about how your brain is working, as you are walking around the course it is important, think of all the players who used to play great yet couldn't even hit a cow's backside with a cricket bat.
