When a sprinkler raises its head

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 14/01/2026

» Sprinkler heads are immovable obstructions, and you get free relief if they interfere with your stance, swing, or lie, but for line-of-play interference (when it's just in the way of your shot direction), you only get relief from this predicament if a local rule is in effect, requiring the sprinkler head and ball to be within two club-lengths of the green and the green's fringe (fairway height or shorter). Without the local rule, you must play it as it lies or take penalty relief.

Choosing the right putter is important

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 20/08/2025

» Putters come in many shapes and sizes: blade putters and mallet putters. Some are more traditional, have a simple design and are often favoured by 'feel' putters who rely more on their intuition and touch. Mallet putters have larger heads and offer more forgiveness on off-centre hits, making them ideal for golfers who prefer a 'straight-back-straight-through' stroke.

Straight talking is the need of the hour in golf

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 01/01/2025

» Please allow me once more to indulge in something different than my normal tip, as rather surprisingly my 'tongue in cheek' tip last week created a great response, which has made me think that some 'Roy Keane' straight talking is perhaps warranted within the business of golf at the moment. Particularly disappointing are those who lack the intestinal fortitude of expressing transparent views and honest reflections of the present state of golf. Candid comments would be refreshing to hear, rather than the 'go with the flow' mundane obligatory words they must utter because of their positions and roles within golf.

Out of bounds: Mastering thoughts for better rounds on course

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 27/11/2024

» The following is from Dr Brasier's experiences of many rounds of golf with many strange people. Golfers don't have a particular tool for creating good rounds, or from their thoughts as they create a good score. All thoughts we have in our minds are not ours. Hidden things from the subconscious are just thoughts. For example, fear is a thought, blocking something out is a thought, habit is a thought, apprehension of a particular course, shot or opponent is a thought. Several kinds of anxieties, any "What if" -- these are also thoughts.

Dispelling myths about head position

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 10/04/2024

» Stay behind the ball is an old saying golfers hear often but show me a player who doesn't move their head during a swing. As all the top players move their heads slightly backwards before and during impact -- never forward.

Keeping your head down for too long will hinder swing

Sports, Brett Brasier, Published on 14/02/2024

» A golfing myth is that we must keep our heads down -- in fact, keeping it down too long will hinder your swing. Keeping your head down too long prevents a good follow-through because a golfer can't swing past hip-high with the head down and not give up something good in the finish to do it.

Turn your golf routine upside down

» Thank you for the lovely feedback on my past tips. Please allow me to reiterate once more that half of our shots are struck within 60 yards of the hole.
