» You have basically three options if your golf ball finds itself in an unplayable lie. An unplayable lie allows a golfer to take relief almost anywhere on the course but comes with a one-stroke penalty, excluding penalty areas. The player is the sole judge of whether a ball is unplayable. The 3-options for relief are -- stroke-and-distance, back-on-the-line, or lateral relief within two club-lengths of where the ball is at rest.

» Before 2025 gets fully underway, checking several basic points in your swing might be beneficial, rather like investing in putting your car in for a service before a long trip. Start with your grip by placing your lead hand on the top of the club with your thumb pointing down the right centre of the grip (for right-handers). Keep the thumb quite short as a long thumb leads to over hinging at the top of your swing.

» As we all know the golf swing looks like one movement, but it's actually made up of many movements all working together. This means that if the clubface is just a little bit off the result is going to grow into a large error by the time the ball comes to rest. If the face is two or three degrees off at impact, the ball will be 20-30 yards off at 200 yards.

» Golf and psychology seem to go together and many a psychiatrist has been visited by a golfer regardless of their competence. I knew of one well known player who when under intense pressure went to what he called the "no mistakes swing" which he had in his repertoire -- a simple, reliable type of swing that he could call upon when he was in contention with a few holes to go. This swing wouldn't do anything fancy and wouldn't hit the ball as far as normal, but it was a repeating swing that would put his ball somewhere in the fairway or on the green.

» Some golfers don't slice every time, even though they don't rotate the club with their hands and wrists, because they hit the ball with their shoulders although using them is not a good way to square up the clubface. It is very inconsistent and leads to an outside-in swing path known as "coming over-the-top."

» Call me a wee bit cynical but just how wonderful everything regarding Tiger Woods makes me remember what short memories many in the media have.

» It's not funny to have to hole a 10-foot putt to fund your next tournament and to keep your career in golf alive.
