Respect the role of journalists

» The government has been raising eyebrows recently with its approach to journalists. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha's supposedly comical spraying of sanitiser on reporters in an apparent attempt to avoid some tough questions last month was a memorable spectacle. This past week, he told a reporter to uncross her legs during a press conference at Government House. The reporter was barred from Government House -- allegedly not for her lack of good manners but her behaviour on social media. Feel a bit like school?
Retract the 14 silly rules

» In just a few days, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has taken a tonne of ridicule about new regulations for media coverage. A 14-point set of so-called guidelines was issued to the press on Friday, especially for photographers. They order news snappers to get prior approval for every set of photos, try to completely ban certain pictures, and even decree that those behind cameras dress better than at present. Some of the orders are more unethical than the actions they seek to regulate.
NACC fails major test

» The National Anti-Corruption Commission has often dropped the ball over the past few years. But its failure both to press the investigation of Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon's wristwatches and inform the public plumbs new depths. The public have rightly responded to last week's statements in both a disappointed and angry manner. It is now a question of whether the current NACC can survive the disdain it has caused.
Airport prices won't fall

» Another investigation of airport food and beverage prices is under way. Officials claim to be shocked at some of the price tags they have seen. Of course the inspecting officials, including cabinet ministers, do not have to mingle with common vendors when they fly.
