» The Ministry of Education has had many corruption cases revealed this year. Some have been of the most venal kind, including theft of funds for student meals, with pupils served starvation lunches. Officials now are trying to dismiss another significant corruption outrage as some sort of minor bookkeeping error. They must not get away with it.

» Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will be abroad for much of the next week at the annual Asean summit taking place in Singapore. The main meeting is scheduled for Thursday, but there will also be the usual flurry of official meetings with major partners, as well as unscheduled but vital one-on-one discussions on the sidelines. Then, on Saturday and Sunday, most of the Asean leaders plus many others will meet at the Apec Summit at Port Moresby.

» As a new batch of conscripts reported to the army late last week, army commander Apirat Kongsompong used the occasion to defend conscription into the Royal Thai Armed Forces. In the process, Gen Apirat stated two different points in one pithy sentence -- one basically true and the other off the track. He also unfortunately took the occasion to champion current military discipline. He would have been better advised to speak about reform of the Thai military, starting with its methods of discipline.

» Last week's summit between the leaders of South Korea and North Korea piles more hope on the chances for peace and a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula. There are plenty of hurdles left, however, and Pyongyang must work hard to leave behind its lamentable record of resorting to bait-and-switch tactics. But what is known and sensed from the talks between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un provides optimism. North Korea may finally be ready to accept the invitation to emerge as part of the responsible world community.
