News, Editorial, Published on 06/11/2022

» On a busy Thursday afternoon in downtown Bangkok, 800 motorcycle delivery drivers clad in iconic green vests converged to protest in front of Grab headquarters on Phetchaburi Road to air their frustration towards its new policy which requires drivers to book a time slot and area to work in.

Reforestation rethink required

News, Editorial, Published on 24/07/2022

» The military was given an earful early this month for using invasive alien species in their aerial reforestation mission, and rightly so. The blunder, however, is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Thailand's reforestation policy, which puts dictatorship and money before ecological health. To save the forest, this self-serving mindset must end.

News, Editorial, Published on 04/04/2021

» The government has been raising eyebrows recently with its approach to journalists. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha's supposedly comical spraying of sanitiser on reporters in an apparent attempt to avoid some tough questions last month was a memorable spectacle. This past week, he told a reporter to uncross her legs during a press conference at Government House. The reporter was barred from Government House -- allegedly not for her lack of good manners but her behaviour on social media. Feel a bit like school?

OPINION

A rare win for quarry locals

Oped, Editorial, Published on 15/10/2020

» A recent ruling by the Supreme Administrative Court to revoke a renewed concession for a quarry in Suwan Khuha of Nong Bua Lam Phu province was a rare victory for local villagers who for years have sought to protect an area that has immense archeological and environment value, as well as save their own livelihoods.

OPINION

Tackling the 'lone wolves'

News, Editorial, Published on 18/03/2019

» The worst massacre of innocents in eight years occurred in peaceful Christchurch on Friday. In a 36-minute orgy in two separate mosques, 50 people were shot dead. A definitely demented but functioning man created an unwatchable Facebook video as he killed from close range. Heroes emerged from the mosque mats and in police ranks, but the worst of the killer's work was done.

Volunteers and success

News, Editorial, Published on 04/07/2018

» The successful search and the coming rescue of the Wild Boar football team is one of our finest moments. The 12 boys and coach were found and then broadcast on video to the nation by skilled and tenacious divers who refused to take a step or stroke backwards for 10 agonising days. They are heroes. So are the hundreds, Thai and foreigner, who supported them directly, as are the thousands who backed them actively.
