» The Rohingya saga has been prominent in some international headlines of late. In addition to the mass exodus, with nearly 300 Rohingya drifting to the shores of Indonesia's Aceh province after spending months at sea, another major cause for concern is the deprivation of voting rights of those Rohingya remaining in western Rakhine state as well as the one million refugees living in neighbouring Bangladesh.

» The three years of excuses for delaying a free and fair election have run out. It is no longer credible that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha can claim technical or parliamentary procedures remain in the way. While his all-powerful National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) harshly enforces a ban on political activity, the prime minister himself is seen to be openly canvassing support for his own campaign. The public needs and deserves an election date and an end to restrictions on freedom of speech and public gatherings.

» The annual US State Department report on efforts to combat human trafficking was released last week, with deserved praise for Thailand. For the second time in three years, the benchmark Trafficking in Persons Report raised the country's ranking against all nations of the world. The promotion to "Tier 2" caused celebration in the military regime. It also warned of serious challenges in the new campaign to raise Thailand from second place to the top.

» Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha played first cool but now cute with his four-year-old promise of holding general elections. Since 2015, the prime minister has promised numerous times that a parliamentary election would occur "next year". Most recently, on the anniversary of his coup, he waffled again, stating there will be an election "no earlier than" early next year.

» Tuesday is the fourth anniversary of the military coup d'etat by Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha. It is no cause for celebration. Indeed, protesters will be active today, demanding that Gen Prayut live up to his promise for a return to democratic principles, starting with a free and fair general election. Now the prime minister, Gen Prayut has promised elections every year since he seized control of government, yet he still refuses to set a date.

Myanmar has already asked the Thai and American experts for help with their self-made crisis over the Rohingya of Rakhine state.

» With a single exception, the past year for Thailand has felt like a quiet period. The nation hopes it was not the lull before the storm. The leader of the military regime, after more than three years of ordering one delay after another, has promised in writing to take the first step towards resuming democratic principles before this new year is out. The country expects Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to meet that promise within 11 months from today.
