News, Editorial, Published on 25/10/2025

» Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul this week granted a small victory to Krabi villagers fighting the quarry industry by agreeing to set up a fact-finding panel to assess the impact of quarrying on ecologically and archaeologically important areas.

Tourism at a crossroads

Oped, Editorial, Published on 30/09/2025

» China's Golden Week starts tomorrow, when over a billion mainland Chinese people return to their homes to celebrate with their families or go travelling abroad. In the lead-up to this, the Thai government, especially the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), have been working hard to urge Chinese travellers to visit the Land of Smiles.

Bad governors unwelcome

» The recent flood disaster in the North, particularly Chiang Rai, brings to light the issue of bureaucratic setbacks.

Births of a nation

Oped, Editorial, Published on 02/11/2023

» The government has pledged to tackle the low birth rate crisis, declaring it a national agenda item. Such a move is timely, if not long overdue, as Thailand has experienced a demographic imbalance for decades.

Review build standard

Oped, Editorial, Published on 22/04/2022

» The government's ambition to turn Thailand into the region's aviation hub suffered a hit after a recently-built roof and walls at Don Mueang airport's new passenger hall collapsed after a fierce storm hit the city on Monday.

Poll-delaying ruse must end

Oped, Editorial, Published on 09/12/2021

» Claims by the Prayut Chan-o-cha government that it has to delay the long-awaited Bangkok governor election out of concern over possible political turmoil are utter nonsense. Prime Minister Prayut recently told the media the government is "still looking for an appropriate time" for the pivotal election, which has been put on hold since he staged a coup in 2014.

OPINION

New year, fresh hope

News, Editorial, Published on 01/01/2019

» Another year, another promise of an election -- only this time the promise appears to be real. The fourth year and part of the fifth under the military regime were hardly noteworthy. The nation survived but did not prosper, economically or morally. There is almost universal hope in every corner of the country that 2019 will be different.

Naturalisation a win-win

News, Editorial, Published on 10/08/2018

» The world rejoiced when the Wild Boars were rescued from Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai. Now there is more good news: Three of the boys -- Adul Sam-on, Mongkol Boonpiam and Pornchai Kamluang -- and their coach Ekkapol Chantawong have officially become Thai citizens. On Wednesday they were among 30 stateless people who took the oath of citizenship at a ceremony in Chiang Rai.

Government exploits Wild Boars

News, Editorial, Published on 30/07/2018

» The government's actions towards the rescued Chiang Rai football team makes it appear confused and cold, not to mention exploitative. This may seem ironic to some, since the government's stated aim was to protect the 12 Wild Boars and their families, along with coach Ekapol Chanthawong. In fact, almost everything ministers and senior officials have done in the days since the rescue succeeded on July 10 has been poorly planned and executed.

OPINION

Don't drag feet on stateless

News, Editorial, Published on 14/07/2018

» After being safely rescued from Tham Luang cave, three members of the Wild Boars football team and their coach find themselves trapped again by a harsh reality -- lack of nationality and the same old plight that comes with illegal status.
