Another health app

News, Editorial, Published on 23/12/2025

» The Public Health Ministry is set to relaunch its Mohpromt application next month, pivoting from its role as a central platform for Covid-19 vaccinations to a comprehensive digital health "super app".

City poll a harbinger?

Oped, Editorial, Published on 26/05/2022

» Chadchart Sittipunt's landslide victory in the gubernatorial election in Bangkok on May 22 has helped restore hope that the political divisions which have riven society for nearly two decades may be drawing to a close.

Punish Covid rule violators

Oped, Editorial, Published on 09/04/2021

» Veteran politician Supachai Jaisamut of the Bhumjaithai Party was absolutely right when he said: contracting Covid-19 is not a crime. Of course, it's not. But deliberately concealing information regarding risky activities that result in new clusters or a new wave of Covid-19 is.

OPINION

Army chief a fearmonger

News, Editorial, Published on 03/01/2020

» As the army chief, Gen Apirat Kongsompong should stay out of politics. But he has always found it hard to resist the temptation of spreading or stirring biased and provocative political messages. His latest remark, which suggests possible arms robbery and associated street violence, is as weak and bewildering as ever because it is not accompanied with even a shred of evidence. It also lacks a sense of certainty. What is certain is that it is a disservice to the nation.

Weaponising fake news

News, Editorial, Published on 16/08/2019

» Both the army and the new government seem to have been troubled by what they described as waves of "fake news".

Tiny parties, giant power

News, Editorial, Published on 14/08/2019

» After a week of what must have been intense negotiations with a small coalition party bloc on their quota of political positions, the administration of Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has managed to survive, for now. These small parties, however, will remain a thorn in the side of the coalition government given its razor-thin majority.

Time to prove them wrong

News, Editorial, Published on 04/06/2019

» Tomorrow is one of the most important days in Thai political history, as elected members of parliament (MPs) and senators will be attending a joint meeting to vote for the next prime minister. It's a moment when Thailand's commitment to democracy will be tested.

Integrity is key for EC

News, Editorial, Published on 06/05/2019

» As the embattled Election Commission (EC) prepares to announce its endorsement of at least 95% of the general election results, roughly equivalent to 475 out of the 500 MP seats up for grabs, many Thais can only hope the poll agency will honour the spirit and intent of the country's election laws and allow candidates who are qualified to serve as MPs to sit in parliament -- and not the other way around.

OPINION

The lack of refugee policy

News, Editorial, Published on 19/02/2019

» Thailand has been at the centre of asylum and refugee disputes since the year began. But in the past six weeks, what has emerged is not a pretty picture. A young Saudi woman won world Twitter backing and a ticket to Canada. A Bahraini refugee from Australia won freedom for a second time with inventive diplomacy. Now three of the seven Uighur migrants who escaped detention at the Mukdahan Immigration office have "won" a police manhunt and a legal limbo where extradition back to China is their No.1 likely future.

OPINION

Good advice, partly taken

News, Editorial, Published on 31/12/2018

» Gen Prem Tinsulanonda was last involved formally in politics just over 30 years ago. Last week, he climbed back into the ring for just a few moments. That was long enough to give good advice, from experience and from the heart, to the current prime minister. Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has said often that Gen Prem is his mentor. He would be wise, then, to take Gen Prem's advice to heart, because if he ignores it he could be courting danger.
